£481 12s. 2d. was received for the "TEMPORAL RELIEF FUND."

This statement is a satisfactory reply to the first question. It shows that interest in behalf of Israel does not decline, and that of the Lord's people, amongst the Gentiles, a very large num

ber" pray for the peace of Jerusalem."

2. The next inquiry is, How has this been expended?

The Report tells us that £27,168 5s. 10d. has been applied to the carrying out of the great objects of the Society" Promoting Christianity amongst the Jews."

First, then, we read of a large number of copies of the blessed Scriptures and of publications for the Jews, which have been sent forth. amongst them.

Ten thousand three hundred and fifty-three copies of the Old Testament, and parts of the Old Testament, and of New Testaments, in Hebrew, German, and English.

Two hundred and thirteen Prayer Books in the same languages; and nearly SIXTY THOUSAND of various publications have issued from the Society's depôt during the year.

The amount received from the sale of Scriptures during the year, was £483 18s. 9d.

There have been no less than thirty-eight thousand two hundred and eighty copies of various publications printed in England; eleven thousand in Warsaw; twelve thousand at Frankfort-on-the Maine; and three thousand at Berlin.

A part of these were Hebrew Scriptures, a part Judæo-Polish, and a part German; the remainder a great variety of books and tractsfor distribution amongst Jews and Christians.

This first part of the answer to the question, How have the funds been expended? is most satisfactory. Think how many thousands of the Jewish nation have heard and will hear the Gospel by means of these welcome messengers. Welcome they generally are, and we know that they are listened to and regarded with deep, and in many instances, under the Divine blessing, with saving interest.

And now let us see what is the reply afforded by another branch of the operations of the Society-ITS SCHOOLS AND MISSIONS.

We shall only give a summary-nearly the mere numbers-now.

Look then at the schools.

(1.) IN LONDON, there are the Hebrew Boys' and Girls' schools. In these, fifty boys and as many girls are educated as Christians, and boarded, clothed, and lodged, by the Society. The instruction given, and the care and culture bestowed, have been blessed to many an immortal soul. As many as 624 Jewish children have been received into these schools since they were opened.

In JERUSALEM, there is a school under the care of the Bishop, in which there are about thirty Jewish children.

At CAIRO, the missionary has a school in which there are twenty-four Jewish children.

In the CONSTANTINOPLE Mission there is a school, recently commenced, where there are about ten of the children of Israel, with Gentile children, under the teaching of the missionary.

There are schools at BUCHAREST, which afford great encouragement. The number of children in these is not stated in the Report.

In the DUCHY OF POSEN there are eleven schools for Jewish Children, supported by the Society. The number of attendants at these schools during the year, was, in April, 510; from May to September, 557; and in October and November, about 400. The decrease is accounted for by the Jews having established two schools of their own, which for a time lessened the number of children coming to the missionary schools. One of those has since been given up.

Respecting these schools the Report remarks: "The attendance was more regular than in the generality of preceding years. The only interruption was from the cholera. The improvement of the children has been satisfactory, both as regards knowledge and conduct."

The children are often messengers of good to their parents and relations, who learn from them the truth which they learn at the school. Here is an instance which occurred last year in one of the Posen schools: A poor woman sent the child of her sister to the mission school, who communicated to her what she was taught. The prayer which she offered during the last eight days of her life, encourages the hope that this child may have been a messenger of mercy. It was, "Lord Jesus, have mercy upon me." Strange, yet blessed prayer, from the lips of a Jewess!

We must pause here, and in our next give further answers to the questions which lead us to the contents of the Report. We have yet to speak of missionary work-to go over a wide field, and just glance at its features. So far as we have gone, we have a satisfactory reply to our second question.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS.

UNDER this title there is a most useful publication of the Society. The questions are difficulties started by the Jews. The answers are replies by learned Christians.

Now we should like to have our "Questions and Answers," and we should like some of our young readers to propose their questions and others of them to send answers; and we shall sometimes give them questions, and sometimes help them, if they need it, to find answers.

But we must add that our range of ques tions must be limited. The subjects of them should be,

I. The BIBLE account of the Jews.

The call of Abraham. The covenant with him. The subsequent history of his children, principally through Isaac. The separation of his descendants from other nations. The fulfilment of the promises. The prophecies relating to them which have not been fulfilled, and illus trations of Scripture from manners and customs, and the Geography of the countries mentioned in the Bible.

II. The Captivities of the Jews. Their causes and their duration.

III. The history of the Jews in Gentile lands to the present time.

IV. The efforts made at different times for their conversion, &c., &o.

In short any questions relating to the peculiar people, or to facts and circumstances illustrating

their past and present condition shall have our best attention, and we shall hope to have a page of questions and answers, in which our younger readers will be interested, and which they themselves will chiefly supply.

Contributions to be sent not later than the 12th day of the month, to the Editor, 16, Lincoln's Inn Fields. If sent later than this date, we fear they cannot be noticed in the next forthcoming number.

Now, young friends of Israel, and youthful readers and lovers of your Bible, give some of your thoughts and direct some of your enquiries in this direction. Let us have QUESTIONS and ANSWERS from you. We do not want to know your names, but we want to know your wishes, as to the points on which you desire information, on the important and deeply interesting subjects connected with the history and the destiny of Israel.

Suppose we make a beginning now, and you give answers to the following questions:-(They are purposely very simple, as all that come from the same questioner will be, he likes simplicity, but finds it very difficult to attain it.)

1. Where is the call of Abraham recorded?

2. What was the nature of the covenant made with him?

3. Tell me in what places of Scripture the covenant is renewed with Abraham, and the peculiar circumstances of any one of these occasions?

4. What was the GREAT object of the call of Abraham ?

Now these are not difficult questions. Send us answers to them, and out of those will arise
