THE following work is divided into eight periods;

and the Reader is requested to bear in mind that it is mainly in the first three and last three periods that historical order and movement are conceived to have been attained. In the two middle periods little is pretended to have been effected beyond giving a complete account of each transaction, or restoring isolated matter to its proper position.

It may be as well to mention also that John iv. 35-38 has been provisionally retained in situ, although it is more than probable that these words were uttered on a similar, but subsequent, occasion not mentioned by either of the Evangelists.
