CHAP. XVIII.

Of the Assurance of Grace and Salvation: Although temporary believers, and other

unregenerate men may vainly deceive @hemfelves with falfe hopes and carnal prefumptions of being in the favour of God, and Atate of Salvation, which hope of theirs shall perish, yet fuch as truly believe in the Lord Jefus, and love him in fincerity, endeavouring to walk in all good Confcience before him may in this life be certainly affured that they are in the ftate of grace, and may rejoycë in the hope of the glory of God, which hope fhall never make them afhamed. a Job 8.13 14 Mic. 3. 11. This certainty is not a bare conjectural and probable perfwafion, grounded upon a fallible hope, but an infallible affurance of Faith, founded on the blood and Righteoufnels of Chrift revealed in the Gofpel, and alfo upon the inward evidence of thofe Graces unto which promises are made, g and cn the Immediate witness of the Spirit, teftifing our Adoption, and as a fruit thereof, leaving the heart more humble and holy ie Heb. 6. 1 1

This infallible affurance doth not fo belong to the effence of Faith, but that a true believer may wait long, and conflict with many difficulties before he be partaker of it; k yet being inabled by the Spirit to know the things which are freely given him of God, he may without extraordinary revelation, in the right ufe of ordinary means attain thereunto: And therefore it is the duty of every one to give all diligence to make their calling and Electi on fare, m that thereby his heart may be inlarged in peace and joy in the holy Ghost, in love and thankfulncis to God, and in strength and cheerfulness in the duties of obedience, the proper fruits of this affurance; fo far is it from inclining men to loofenefs: • k I Job 5.13a 50.10 Mat. 9.24 Pfal 38 per tot Pfa. 77. 1. to 12. 1 Cor. 2. 1, 2. 1 John 4.13 Heb 6. 11, 12 Epb. 3. 17, 18, 192 Pet. 2. 10.
