PREFACE.

THE following Commentary has been written with the object of encouraging the more careful and systematic study of the Psalms, and especially of those selected by the Church for Certain Days; and to render this study as attractive and simple as possible. Psalms are very often prescribed as tasks for repetition, but beyond this, little pains are bestowed to give the pupil methodical and intelligible instruction in their beauty, their character, and their importance. Their teachings are seldom set clearly before the young in their Christian aspect in relation to God, to the Church, and to ourselves.. But above all, the witness they bear to Christ, in type, shadow and prophecy, render the Psalms a study of deep interest, and great importance, and calculated to be not only a profitable mental task, but of the highest spiritual advantage to those engaged in it. If the following pages can in any measure promote the more attentive and popular study of the Psalms, and help to commend them to the head and heart of Teachers and taught, the object of the author will be gained, and his long cherished wishes realized.

Christ Church, Chester, 1879.

JAMES DAVIDSON.
