Iris moved off down the hall. "Talk!" she said. "Hah!" "You be ready," said Rosetta,
"and when I call, you damn well come." "Yes'm." Iris returned to the kitchen. In the
hallway, Rosetta turned on the lights. With a final look at Jessica's door, she went
back into her office and sat down. She switched on one lamp there, on her desk.
Outside, she could just see to the stable doors, open, and the shape of her
brother's head and shoulders, where he sat utterly still in Gilbert's car. Iris said, "

Harris' appearance. And to Mr. Parker he also said something pleasant. Then
Hooker saw the Harrises rivet their gaze on Mr. Parker, but Rosetta, her little
hands reaching in either direction, one in greeting and the other in farewell,
touched the Harrises and Mr. Parker away, and stepped in alone toward Gilbert.

He bent to retrieve it, calling, "Rosetta," holding it softly out toward her — but she
was gone into the Harris enclosure, and they and she and Mr. Parker, in a ring of
safety and confusion, moved to one of the bars. Nicholas and Hooker and a few
strangers were left. But Gilbert no longer saw them. His fingers clutching the bag,
he crossed to Rosetta and forced it upon her, and then, with a nod at Mr. Parker,
he turned swiftly and went away in the direction of the parking lot. Rosetta
