L'ECOLE DES MARIS, comédie en trois aftes en vers, représentée à Paris fur le théatre du palais royal le 24 Juin 1661. Chaque fcéne produit un incident nouveau, & ces incidens développés avec art, aménent infenfiblement un des plus beaux dénouemens qu'on ait vus fur le théatre françois. Les Adelphes de Térence n'ont fourni que l'idée de l'école des maris: dans les Adelphes, deux vieillards d'humeurs oppofées, un pêre & un oncle, donnent une éducation très-diffèrente, l'un à fon fils, l'autre à fon neveu; dans l'école des maris, ce font deux tuteurs chargés d'élever chacun une fille qui leur a été confiée; l'un févere, l'autre indulgent: le pcëte françois a enchéri fur le poëte latin, en donnant à ces deux perfonnages, non feulement l'intérêt de péres, mais encore celui d'amans; intérêt fi fin, fi vif, qu'il forme une pièce toute nouvelle, fur l'idee fimple de l'ancienne. 1 The SCHOOL for HUSBANDS, a Comedy of three Acts in Verfe, acted at Paris, at the Theatre of the Palace-Royal, June 24, 1661. HERE are few Pieces, efpecially of three Acts, fo fimple, fo polifh'd, and fo copious as this: Every Scene produces a new Incident, and these Incidents, artfully unfolded, infenfibly lead to one of the most beautiful Cataftrophes that was ever feen upon the French Stage: The Adelphi of Terence only gave the Hint to the School for Husbands. In the Adelphi two old Men of oppofite Humours, one a Father, and the other an Uncle, gave a very very different Education, the one to his Son, and the other to his Nephew. In the School for Husbands are two Guardians, who had each of them the Care of bringing up a young Girl, that was intrusted to them, the one of them being of a rigid Temper, the other of an indulgent one. The French Poet has improv'd upon the Latin one, in giving to his two Characters, not only the Concern of Fathers, but of Lovers likewife, an Interest fo exquifite and lively, that it forms a Piece intirely new upon the fimple Plan of the ancient Author. 933 |
