APPENDIX,

Containing a few brief Collects of Prayer and Thanksgiving, applicable to the various conditions of the Sick, and which may be added, at discretion, to any of the foregoing Prayers.

Prayers.

I.

For the removal of pain.

ALMIGHTY Saviour, Who knowest the power of strong pain to weary and depress the spirit, and to bring down the body to the verge of the grave; Who wast suspended for six long hours upon the bitter cross in intolerable agonies; hear us, we beseech Thee on behalf of this our sick brother, and graciously subdue the violence of his malady. So let his mind be the calmer, and his soul the better enabled to hold communion with Thee. Or, if it be contrary to Thy holy Will to hear us in this matter, may Thy grace be sufficient for him, and Thy strength be made perfect in his weakness, that he may glorify Thy holy Name in all Thou permittest him to bear. Hear us for the sake of Thine own precious cross and passion. Amen.

II.

For the Gift of Sleep.

OH LORD, Who givest Thy beloved sleep, graciously visit our sick brother, we beseech Thee, with this needful blessing. Thou holdest his eyes waking, and the malady thereby is gaining strength over him. Oh let the gift of peaceful slumber from Thyself weigh down his weary eyelids, and refresh his weakened frame, and compose his troubled mind, and so help us all afterwards to bless and praise Thy holy Name for having graciously answered this our humble petition. Hear us for Thy dear Son's sake, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

III.

For Deliverance from great Prostration. ALMIGHTY GOD, who bringest down to the grave and raisest up, consider, we beseech Thee, the low estate of bodily energy to which our brother, has been reduced by sickness. Thou who didst command the paralytic to arise and walk, mercifully exercise, if it be Thy holy Will, Thy great power in the restoration of his weakened frame to its wonted strength. But may he and we say from our hearts, "Thy Will be done." Hear us, for Thy dear Name's sake. Amen.

IV.

For Patience.

Он blessed Lord Jesus, Who wast led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, didst not open Thy mouth, take away, we beseech Thee, all impatient murmurings and repinings from the heart and the lips of our sick brother. Give him abundantly Thy holy Spirit, that in his patience he may possess his soul. Graciously

bear with him, oh Lord, and for the sake of Thy precious bloodshedding forgive the irritation of his spirit. And help all who minister to his wants to be very kind and tenderhearted and considerate towards him, forasmuch as all men are compassed with infirmity. Hear and answer us, we beseech Thee, for Thy precious merits' sake. Amen.

V.

For the removal of Delirium.

OH GOD, who hast created all our powers of soul, and mind, and body, for the glorification of Thy holy Name, mercifully recall, we pray Thee, the mind of our sick brother from its grievous wanderings, and render him calm and collected in Thee. May all who love and watch over him have given to them an opportunity of uniting their thanksgivings to

Thee with his own, that Thou hast in Thine infinite goodness heard this our feeble prayer. Hear us, oh Lord, for Thy dear Son's sake, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

VI.

For God's blessing on the means used to promote

recovery.

LORD of all power and might, Who art the Author and Giver of all good things, and Who hast given medicine to heal the sickness of Thy people, mercifully bless, we beseech Thee, the means that are being used to promote the recovery of our sick brother. Help him, by Thine abundant grace, to feel assured that, without Thy blessing, his physician's skill must be exercised all in vain. Graciously give wise discretion to his medical adviser, strengthen all who tend him in this season of helplessness to do their duties effectually, and let no medicine be taken by him without some measure of success attending its use. Thy holy Will be done. Hear us for Thy dear Son's sake, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

[See also the prayers at the close of the Order for the visitation of the sick.]

hanksgivings.

I.

For the abatement of Pain.

OH LORD, who art full of compassion and tender mercy towards all Thy creatures, although we have rebelled against Thee, graciously accept our unfeigned thanks and praise, we beseech Thee, for that Thou hast heard our prayer, and hast caused the violence of our sick brother's pain to abate. help us all to receive this Thy loving gift with real gratitude, and to rest and trust in Thee for ever and ever, for Jesus Christ's sake, our only Lord and Saviour. Amen.

Oh

II.

For the Gift of Sleep.

BLESSED and praised be Thy holy Name, oh Lord, for that Thou hast graciously vouchsafed to our sick brother the gift of refreshing slumber. He has laid him down and slept, he has awaked, for Thou didst sustain him. Oh grant that this seasonable rest may be a means in Thy hands of promoting his recovery to health, and ever preserve him in Thy love and faith and fear, for the precious merits of Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
