BEFORE the Reader

enters on the following Difcourses, I think it necessary to acquaint him, that, being de-termined not to engage in Controversy, I shall make no reply to any Animadverfions on the account which, in the last five of them, I have given of the Doctrines of Christianity; ex-. cept, by acknowledging the miftakes into which I may have fallen, when convinced of them.

SERMON I

Of the Security of a Virtuous Courfe.

PROVERBS x. 9.

ME THAT WALKETH UPRIGHTLY WALKETH SURELY

THESE words exprefs one of the

most important of all maxims. They tell us, that in the practice of virtue there is SAFETY. Much higher praise may be be ftowed upon it. We may fay that with it are connected peace, honour, dignity, the fa vour of God, happiness now, and ETERNAL happiness hereafter: And we have reafon enough to think this true. But whether true or not, it is at least true, that there is SAFETY in it.

Christianity informs us, that good men will be raised from death to enjoy a glorious immortality, through that Saviour of the world, who tafted death for every man
