T

HE extraordinary popularity of the "Shakespeare," "Tennyson," "Longfellow," "Scriptural," and other Birthday-books suggested to me the idea to compile, for the amusement of all who take interest in the musical art, a "Birthday Book of Musicians and Composers." With regard to Music, poetical allusions, although many may be found, are mostly of too vague and general a character to be useful and practical for the present purpose. For this reason I thought that it would not only be of greater interest, but also more practically useful, to devote the space of every date-so far as possible-to a notice of the birth of some great, influential, meritorious, and popular Composer, Theorist, Historian, Musical Archeologist, Singer, or Instrumentalist, and to apply the remaining space for the insertion of pithy remarks, reflec
