No, Sir, ask yourself, as a man of candour, if idleness, hunting, dancing, feasting, card-playing, and such like things, do not consume almost every waking hour of every person present. With a smile, he replied, certainly. Well, Sir, do you seriously think, that God created, and presently supports, man for no nobler or more exalted ends than these? He replied, I cannot say. Seeing you confess ignorance on this subject, I beg you would, without delay, read the word of God for information. It is of inconceivable importance to judge right upon this matter. None of us shall be long here, eternity is at hand, and depend upon it, God will judge every Iman by that word which he has given us. Let any of this company think how they shall be able to dwell with everlasting burnings. If you flee not to the Saviour for refuge from them, you are as certain of enduring them for ever, as that we are sitting round this table.-Upon this some of the ladies fainted, and were carried off, which created a considerable uproar in the family, and I was condemned by all present for rashness and rudeness. After we were a little quieted, I enquired if they really wished to go to misery blindfold. If what I state be true, you must not reflect on me; I am only repeating what is true, whether I speak of it or no. If it be false, why be afraid of it? But your own consciences tell you there is a day of retribution approaching, and ye hate the truth. I beg you to think of a Saviour in time; he is now revealed to you for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God.

Mr. B. on this shrugged up his shoulders, observing I was become an odd sort of fellow since I went

to the Continent, and advised my father to forbid Swiss divinity from ever being mentioned at table, assuring him it was quite infectious, and would soon pollute his whole household, if he did not decidedly oppose it. Here our conversation ended.

AFTER the company were gone, all the family reproached me for having spoiled their evening's mirth. One of my sisters expressed her persuasion that some of the ladies would visit us no more, and was sure that this evening's affray would afford sport to all the country. I asked her if gowns and ribbons were more important topics for conversation than the salvation of the soul. No, said she, but there is a time for every thing under the sun. Sister, what is your time for talking about salvation? Sunday, said she. Well, Sunday will soon be here; if we live, you and I shall have a conversation upon that subject. O, no, brother, I beg you never to speak to me about any such thing, it does me much hurt: I trembled exceedingly whilst you was speaking to-night to Mr. B. I assure you,

brother, my nerves are too weak to stand such onsets. O, my dear sister, you talk very unwisely. Suppose now that our kitchen should take fire to-night,' do you think it would be wrong in me to run up stairs and warn you of your danger, because the information would probably hurt your feelings? Is not your life more precious than your feelings? In the same manner your soul, your everlasting happiness, is far more important than your present temporary feelings. assure you, sister, if you neglect salvation now, you will feel for ever. Delicate ladies, and the vilest debauchees, if both continue to despise the Saviour, shall suffer similar misery in the eternal world. God, who is to judge them, is no respecter of persons; he shall pass a most righteous sentence.

I

There, said she, you are back to the old story! I told her I had her salvation so much at heart, I could not refrain speaking about it. I came from Switzerland on purpose to tell you about Jesus, said I, and I hope I shall give you no rest till I see you out of danger. What danger do you mean, brother? Of hell. If you do not repent of your sins, and turn to the Lord, there you must land at last, and from thence there is no redemption. But Jesus is now ready to save you; he this moment calls to you. Oh! what does he say? said she. He says, Come unto me, and I will give you rest. On this she and the rest of the young people went up stairs to bed, very thoughtful.

My father and mother sat quite amazed, but said nothing. I then went to my bed-room, and spent the greater part of the night in prayer for my dear friends.

Next morning at breakfast, I was glad to perceive every one thoughtful, and all of them spoke to me more respectfully than they had the preceding day. During the whole day they were more anxious for me to speak

about the Scriptures than they were against my doing it yesterday. I cannot express how happy I was to observe this.

Perhaps at some future opportunity I may continue this history of myself and friends. At present I can only add that my attempts were blessed of God to the conversion of several in our family.
