DORE'S MOST ELEGANT WORK IN ENGLISH. Just Ready, with magnificent Illustrations by Gustave Dore.
Price, $io 50.
A Collection of the Favorite Old Tales. Illustrated by the pencil of Gustave Doré. Told in Verse by Tom Hood. Small folio, printed on fine paper by Dalziel Brothers.
Handsomely bound in extra cloth, full gilt side and edges.
“If the writer has handled the subject in as effective a manner as could be desired, the same may be said of the illustrator, M. Gustave Doré. This young artist, whose fertility of imagination is little short of astounding, has given further proof—if such were needed—of the manner in which he can adapt his pencil to his subject. He can draw a happy group of children thronging to hear some tale of fairy lore, as well as depict the horrors of the infernal regions. Very fine, too, are his landscape scenes, and strikingly effective is the manner iu which the gleam of the torch-lights, in his illustrations to 'Hop-o'-my Thumb,' stand out from their background of dense, dark foliage.”—Reader.
“The volume is no mere ornament for a drawing-room table. It is a true work of art; as such we recommend it, and we venture to say that no lover of art will be long without it.”—Dublin Evening Post.
“The stories are told in smooth and witty verse by Tom Hood, whose efforts, though spent on such oft-told themes, contrive to invest them with new points of interest. Many as have been the contributions to the illustrated literature of the day from the facile pencil of Doré, it is questionable whether he has ever acquitted himself more brilliantly than in this exceedingly pretty work.”— Liverpool Albion.

CHARLES SCRIBNER & COMPANY,
HAVE JUST REMOVED TO
JUST READY. LIFE OF BENJ. SILLIMAN, M.D., LL. D., late Professor of Chemistry, Geology, and Mine
ralogy in Yale College, Founder and Editor of the “ American Journal of Science and the Arts,' etc. etc. By Geo. P. FISHER, Prof. in Yale College. 2 vols. crown 8vo., with fine portrait and other illustrations. Cloth, $5.
This work is, to a large extent, compiled from the copious reminiscences which Prof. Silliman wrote in the last years of his life. It embraces a detailed record of the rise and progress of the departments in the Yale College, which, during half a century, were under his care, and is, indeed, a full record of his public labors and personal bistory, including his intercourse with eminent men. Besides Prof. Silliman's own letters, the work contains many interesting letters from bis correspondents at home and abroad, including Chancellor Kent, John C. Calhoun, Kobert Y. Hayne, J. Fenimore Cooper, President Hitchcock, Josiah Quincy, Humboldt, Carl Ritter, Agassiz, Lyell, Murchison, Herschel, Mantell, &c. &c. In the Appendix are printed very important letters from Gen. Wash. ington, and also letters from John Adams, Lafayette, and others, addressed to the members of the Trumbull family.
SECOND VOLUME OF LANGE'S COMMENTARY, containing MARK. Edited by Rev. Dr. W.G. T. SAEDD; and LUKE, edited by Rev. Dr. P. Schaff, and Rov. C. C. STARBUCK. 1 vol. royal 8vo. $5.
We are now printing the sixth thousand of the first rolume of this work, containing MATTHEW, edited by Rer, Dr. P. SCHAFF.
These rolumes contain one-fourth more matter than the original. Other volumes of the Commentary are already in course of preparation by the editor and the Rev. Drs. Schaffer, Poor, Lillie, Hackett, Yeomans, Kendrick, Mombert, Starbuck, Day, and Tayler Lewis. Each volume will contain one or more books, and thus be completo in itself. Price of each volume, $5.
Two new volumes, 5 and 6, of Froude's England. HISTORY OF ENGLAND, from the fall of Wolsey, to the death of Elizabeth. By JAMES A. FROUPE, M. A., of Exeter College, Oxford. From the fourth London edition. In crown 8vo. vols. Price $2 50 eacb. (The other volumes will follow shortly.)
Mr. Froude has shown in his admirable history what new results may be derived, eren in the most benten track, from a thorough investigation of the original authorities. His researches have thrown a flood of light over the personal character of Henry the Eighth and his relation to the great event of modern history—the Reformation of Religion in Europe and the British Isles-that it would be in vain to seek elsewhere.
A new volume, Part II., of STANLEY'S JEWISH CHURCH. LECTURES ON THE HISTORY OF THE JEWISH CHURCH, from Samuel to the Cap
tivity. By A. P. STANLEY, D. D., author of “Sinai and Palestine." 1 vol. 8vo. Maps and illustrations. Price $5.
Earnest, eloquent, learned, with a style that is never monotonous, but luring through its eloquence, the lectures will maintsia his fame as author, scholar, and divide. We could point out many passages that glow with a true poetic fire, but there are bundreds pictorially rich and poetically true. The reader experiences no weariness, for in every page and paragraph there is something to engage the mind and refresh the soul.- London Critic.
New Book by C. L. Brace. SHORT SERMONS TO NEWSBOYS; with a history of the formation of the Newsboys' Lodging House. 1 vol. 16mo., with illustrations; 350 pages. $1 50.
This volume is designed for Sunday Schools and Mission Schools, and similar institutions, and to furnish that most difficult material, Sunday home reading for children in fainilies. The first part contains an account of that singular class, the street boys of New York, and their temporary home, the Lodging House. The Sermons are familiar religious talks on subjects interesting to all children, interspersed with allegories and illustrations, and in connection are given incidents in the lives of the newsboys.
TEMPERANCE-RECOLLECTIONS, LABORS, DEFEATS, TRIUMPHS. An Autobiography.
By Rev. JOHN MARSH, D. D., Secretary to the three first National Temperance Conventions, and thirty years Corresponding Secretary and Editor of the “ American Temperance Union." 1 vol. 12mo., 350 pages. $2 25.
Dr. Marsh has been more conversant with the Temperance cause from its commencement than almost any man Dow living, and has himself, as Secretary of the National Society, been immediately connected with all the most interesting events. The object of this work is more especially to give an account of what he has been an eye and ear witness of himself, even from his boyhood, at the same time he has given a good account of the general progreas of the work in the world. It is expected, by those who know bim here, that it will prove a work of great Falue, and deeply interesting to all classes and associations of temperance men. Said General Cary, of Cincinnati, some years ago, "No man in America is so prepared to write a history of the Temperance Reformation as Dr. Marsh."
New Book by the late Mrs: C. M. Kirkland. PATRIOTIC ELOQUENCE; being selections from One Hundred Years of National Literature.
Compiled for the use of Schools in Reading and Speaking. 1 vol. 12mo. $1 75.
The aim of tbis book is patriotic. It is designed to store the memories of the children of our country, during the course of their education, with the thoughts and expressions once so potent as watchwords of freedom, and to keep alive reverence for our fathers, and gratitude for the prosperity and happiness they won for us. In addition to the specimens of early American oratory, the book is enhanced in value by the introduction of some examples of the oratory and poetry which have been called forth by the events of the past four years.
