Battle-Pieces and Aspects of the War. By Herman Melville. pp. x., 272. New York: Harper & Brother.

Mr. Melville has abundant force and fire. He breathes the enthusiasm of his time, and his words will kindle afresh the patriotic flame. But he has written too rapidly to avoid great crudities. His poety runs into the epileptic. His rhymes are fearful. The first one in his book makes "law" and "Shenandoah" rhyme. But as if to show the reader how mistaken he is in imagining that the poet does his best worst at the outstart, he makes (p. 82) "war" and "Shenandoah" rhyme. The Early Jesuit Mission in North America: Compiled and translated from the Letters of the French Jesuits, with Notes. By the Right Rev. William Ingraham Kip, D. D., Bishop of California, Hon. Member N. Y. Historical Society. pp. xiv., 325. Albany, New York: Pease & Prentice.

This volume is rich in information. In connection with its main subject, which is in itself profoundly interesting, it furnishes a large body of incidental matter in regard to Indian life and the early history of North America. The selection of Bishop Kip is judicious and his rendering easy and accurate. We are glad to see this reissue of a valuable work.

Six Months in the White House with Abraham Lincoln: The story of a picture. By F. B. Carpenter. pp. 359. New York: Hurd & Houghton.

Mr. Carpenter, the painter of "The First Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation," used well the six months of his intimacy in the White House, and has given us in this republication of his articles in the "Independent," pleasant sketches, and reminiscences of our late lamented President, and of the men who surrounded him in the great crisis through which our land has recently passed. This volume is one of important materials for the biography of Mr. Lincoln, and for a just estimate of his genial nature and noble character.

SCIENCE.

Madras versus America: a Handbook of Cotton Cultivation, exhibiting contents of Public Records in a Condensed Form in accordance with the Resolution of the Government of India. By J. Talboys Wheeler, Resident in India. pp. 238, lxviii. New York: Virtue & Yorston.

A manual exhaustive in its discussion of very vital questions as to the growth especially of the long fibre cotton. It demonstrates that no country on earth can successfully compete with our own in the growth of the most desirable cotton. It is well printed, and shows its English origin. Comfort for Small Incomes.

By Mrs. Warren, author of "How I Managed on Two Hundred Pounds a Year," "How I Managed iny Children." pp. 94. Boston: Loring.

Full of valuable hints for the kitchen; a sort of romance of cookery well sandwiched with recipes

and practical suggestions; good for young housekeepers and for old ones, too, who are not beyond learning.

Chemical Tables. By Stephen P. Sharples, S.B. pp. 192. Cambridge: Sever & Francis.

A laborious, comprehensive, and accurate digest, well supplying a great want.

MORAL.

A Woman's Thoughts about Women. By Miss Mulock, author of "John Halifax, Gentleman," &c. pp. 309. Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson & Bros. A book which cannot be thoughtfully read without making the reader purer, wiser, and more contented. We wish men would read it for woman's sake and women for their own.

TRAVELS.

Sketches of Russian Life Before and During the Emancipation of the Serfs. Edited by Henry Morley, Professor of English Literature in University College, London. pp. vii., 298.

An exceedingly sprightly and readable chronicle of Russian experience.

FICTION. Inside: A Chronicle of Secession. By George F. Harrington. With illustrations by Thomas Nast. pp. 223. New York: Harper & Bros.

If this novel is to be considered as a work of art, it must be pronounced a failure. The author does not reveal the creative faculty in any very high degree. If, however, it be taken as a "chronicle," in which the story is a mere means and not at all an end, as the thread, and by no mauner of means the pearl-it has interest and value. It gives more of the "pulse of the machine" than most of the professed, elaborate histories.

The Hidden Sin: A Novel. With numerous illustrations. pp. 189. New York: Harper & Bros. Philip Eamescliffe; or, the Morals of May Fair: A Novel. By the author of "The Ordeal for Wives," "Archie Lovell," "Miss Forrester," &c. pp. 173. New York: The American News Company.

ARMY.

Customs of Service for the Officers of the Army, as Derived from Law and Regulations, and Practised in the United States Army, &c. By August V. Kautz. pp. 389. Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co.

A convenient little hand-book for officers of the line-a good guide to those who are beginning, and a valuable remembrancer to those who have more experience.

JUVENILE. England Two Hundred Years Ago. By E. H. Gillett, author of "Life and Times of John Huss," &c. pp. 363. Philadelphia: Presbyterian Publication Society.

Amy Rivers; or, the Girl who did not Know How to Live. By Nellie Grahame. pp. 142. Philadelphia Presbyterian Publication Society,

Ned Turner; or, the Boy who Said "Wait a Minute." By Nellie Grahame. pp. 140. Philadelphia: Presbyterian Publication Society. Little Nellie's Velvet Carpet. pp. 72. Philadelphia Presbyterian Publication Society.
