This work is heartily indorsed by many of our leading clergy, among whom we may name Rev. Thomas Armitage, D.D., who says: "I have examined with much care and great interest the specimen sheet sent me. I believe that the book furnishes evidences of proposed faithfulness, more than usual scholar-,] ship, and remarkable literary industry. It cannot fail to be an important help to those who wish to become better acquainted with the revealed will of God. For these reasons I wish the enterprise of publishing the work great success " Rev. Samuel Osgood, D.D., says: "I think it will be a valuable addition to our Christian literature.' Rev. James L. Hodge says: "I can most cordially thank Mr. Wilson for his noble work, and you, gentlemen, for your Christian enterprise in bringing the work before the public. I believe the work will aid in the better understanding of the New Testament." Rev. Henry Blanchard says: "I like very much his method of interlinear and literal translation." Rev. Dr. Dowling says: "It will be of great assistance to all learners of the Greek language, especially to those who wish to study without the aid of a teacher." Rev. O. B. Frothingham says: "The plan is new, and is better calculated than any I have ever seen to give the public a notion of the way in which the translation was made from the Greek." Criticisms have been received from Revs. Messrs. Eddy, Warren, Mattison, Adams, Collier, Peters, Livermore, Stockton, Tyug, Goodwin, Corning, and others, most of whom approve, as above.

A HISTORY OF THE

Devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary

IN NORTH AMERICA.

BY THE

REV. XAVIER DONALD MACLEOD,

Prof. of Rhetoric and Belles-lettres Mount St. Mary's College, Cincinnati.

With a Memoir of the Author.

BY THE MOST REV. JOHN B. Purcell,
Archbishop of Cincinnati.

Illustrated with a finely engraved Steel Portrait of the

Author.

It is one of the most beautiful specimens of sacred or secular literature, and one of the most fervent tributes of catholic piety to the Queen of Heaven and Earth that we have ever seen.Catholic Telegraph.

A page of American history that is scarcely thought of, yet one that the genius of the author of Pynushurst has invested with rare grace and beauty. It is, indeed, the history of a sentiment, but of a sentiment which has already erected charitable institutions of every kind in the country, and stimulated devoted Christians in the cause of educational and moral regeneration. The subject is one for a poet no less than the historian, and Mr. Macleod shows the research of the one, and the inspiration of the other.-Hist. Mag.

It is a work of deep research, great information, thrilling interest, and written in a beautiful style.-Boston Pilot.

Prof. Wood's New Class-Book of Botany; Being Outlines of the Structure, Physiology, and Classification of Plants. With a Flora of the United States and Canada. 745 Illustrations; 832 pp.; 8vo. cloth. Price $3 50.

These works are the most popular published in this country upon this topic. For the use of Schools, Academies and Colleges, they are confessedly unrivalled. While equally exhaustive and accurate with other treatises, their systematic arrangement and peculiar adaptation to the young, reuders them pre· eminently successful. As text-books no others are to be compared with them.

The last annual report of the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York sets forth that out of 142 Academies in the State pursuing the study of Botany, 86, or more than three-fifths of the whole number, use Wood as the standard Text-book. A like proportion prevails elsewhere. The annual sale of the books is believed to exceed that of all competing works combined. No recommendation in their favor can be more conclusive than this-especially when it is considered that the new Class-Book was first issued in 1861, and the "Object Lessons" in 1863.
