NEW BOOKS

ISSUED BY

BLELOCK & CO.,

19 Beekman Street, New York.

An Edition called for every week.
GEORGE ALFRED TOWNSEND'S

CAMPAIGNS OF A NON-COMBATANT,

AND HIS ROMAUNT ABROAD DURING THE WAR.
Third Edition now ready.

Ho! pony, down the lonely road
Strike now your cheeriest pace!
The woods on fire do not burn higher
Than burns my anxious face;
Far have you sped, but all this night
Must feel my nervous spur;

If we be late, the world must wait
The tidings we aver:

To home and hamlet, town and hearth,

To thrill child, mother, man,

I carry to the waiting North
Great news from Sheridan!

Many books upon the war have been written, but none that has attempted, in prose, to make vivid and picturesque to the civilian the hurry, bustle, and bloodiness of battle. The present volume is a powerful embodiment of these phases, written by a young American litterateur, whose letters in their first newspaper publication were not only the talk of every cottage and hamlet in America, but were copied into the London "Times," translated into French, German, and Spanish, and were accredited as the most spirited and extraordinary pictures of the war.

His account of the Battle of Five Forks was praised by the households of Generals Grant, Meade, Sherman, Sheridan, and Slocum; and the Seven Days' Battles received from Mr. Townsend the only treatment which passed the boundaries of commonplace description, and took the light and shadow of

romance.

12mo., cloth. Price $1 75.

SOUTH SONGS,

FROM THE LAYS OF LATER DAYS.
Collected by T. C. DE LEON, Editor of The Cosmopolite..

12mo., fine muslin, gilt edges, bevelled boards, tinted paper. Price $1 75. "This delightful volume is a contribution to American letters, for which all interested in them owe a debt to its editor and publisher. It fills a niche that without it would have remained vacant to all time: and, where we have all other kinds, relates most touchingly the heart history of the Southern people.

[ocr errors]

"The poems have evidently been selected solely with a view to their intrinsic elegance and power. They comprise ballads with all the ring and fire of the good old days;' lyrics of a polished and classic beauty, that would do credit to the first of modern poets; and some dirges that, for exquisite delicacy and pathos, can be excelled by nothing in the language.

[ocr errors]

Independent of other interest that may attach to them, the poems themselves are the best we have ever seen under one cover. But not the least curious part of the work is that such beauties could have remained hidden so long."-Review.

A PRACTICAL HOMŒOPATHIC TREATISE ON THE DISEASES OF WOMEN AND CHILDREN: intended for Intelligent Heads of Families and Students in Medicine. By HENRY MINTON, M. D.

This is a work containing a minute description of the nature, cause, symptoms, and treatment of the various diseases to which females and children are liable. It is strongly marked by common sense and sound philosophy; is specially adapted for general use; is free from ambiguous descriptions and technicalities; and has received the highest encomiums from every physician or medical journal that has reviewed it.

Octavo, pp. 486. Price, cloth, $3 50; sheep, $4 50.
