for, besides the limited number of lessons given in public schools, it often happens that a foreigner who teaches his own language is not sufficiently conversant with that of his pupils to interpret foreign authors, point out the expressions corresponding to the original, or correct the errors in their translations.

It will be better to avoid learning words as a preparation to reading. In acquiring the knowledge of our own language, we pass from phraseology to words. The office they fill in discourse determines their value, and the class to which they belong. Therefore, they should be learned, not in vocabularies, but orally or through written expressions, their relations to each other determining the sense, and associating them in the mind by a logical connection of ideas.

This is the object of our first book; it treats of familiar subjects, and is written in a plain and offhand style, rejecting as much as possible all idiomatic expressions, to avoid at the outset two difficulties at once-the subject and the idiom. Ideas being expressed in the plainest manner in both texts, the connection word by word, which consequently exists between them, facilitates their reciprocal translation, and can thus be equally useful to both nations to acquire each other's language.

Starting from this rule, that we can only transLate what we understand, the two texts are placed

On s'abstiendra d'apprendre des mots comme préparation à la lecture. Nous arrivons à l'intelligence de notre langue en passant de la phraséologie aux mots: c'est la fonction qu'ils remplissent dans le discours qui détermine leur valeur et la classe à laquelle ils appartiennent. On les apprendra donc, non dans des vocabulaires, mais dans le discours parlé ou écrit, à l'aide des rapports qui en fixent le sens et les lient dans l'esprit par l'enchaînement logique des idées.

C'est dans ce but que nous offrons ce premier livre; il traite de matières familières et est écrit dans un style simple et dégagé, autant que possible, de locutions idiomatiques, pour éviter, au commencement, deux difficultés à la fois, celle du sujet et celle de la langue. La pensée y étant ramenée à sa plus simple expression dans les deux textes, leur correspondance mot à mot, qui en résulte naturellement, facilite leur traduction réciproque de l'une dans l'autre et peut ainsi servir aux deux peuples pour apprendre la langue l'un de l'autre.

Basée sur cette vérité qu'on ne peut traduire que ce que l'on comprend, nous avons mis en regard les

opposite to each other-the one clearly and correctly interpreting the other. Moreover, to enable beginners to attach to foreign words their real meaning, we have, with few exceptions only, used words having an identical signification in both languages, thus sacrificing to the study of words the idiomatic purity of style, but without deviating from grammatical correctness. The great simplicity, and even the frivolous style of the first books, cannot in any manner interfere with subsequent improvement, if they are followed by the perusal of good works. The best authors, the finest orators, have in their childhood gone through the routine of trifling and commonplace expressions, without the beauty of their style being affected by it.

The words of the two languages, thus occupying parallel positions, make our books real vocabularies, but vocabularies that appeal to the understanding as well as to memory, and in which the sense of each word is determined by the context. After reading the same passages several times, the words will be stamped upon the mind in a more positive manner than they would be by the mechanical and irksome labor of imparting them to memory, through vocabularies or unconnected phrases, bearing no reference to each other, as are found in several of the new methods.

In consequence of the interest attached to the subject, and of the succession of ideas in these RATIONAL VOCABULARIES, each phrase, being once under

De plus, pour que le commençant attache aux mots étrangers leur véritable signification, nous n'avons, à de rares exceptions près, employé dans ce premier livre que ceux qui ont une valeur identique dans les deux langues, sacrifiant ainsi à l'étude des mots la pureté idiomatique du style; mais sans nous départir de la correction grammaticale. La simplicité, la trivialité même du langage des premiers livres ne nuit en rien aux progrès ultérieurs, si, à leur suite, on lit les bons auteurs: les meilleurs écrivains, les plus grands orateurs ont tous passé, dans leur enfance, par la filière des puérilités et des banalités, sans que plus tard la pureté de leur style en ait souffert.

Les mots des deux langues, ainsi mis en parallèle, font de nos livres de véritables vocabulaires; mais des vocabulaires qui s'adressent à l'entendement aussi bien qu'à la mémoire, et dont tous les mots ont ainsi un sens déterminé par le contexte. La lecture à plusieurs reprises des mêmes passages gravera les mots dans l'esprit d'une manière plus sûre que le travail machinal, abrutissant, de les apprendre par cœur dans des vocabulaires ou dans des phrases sans liaison, sans aucun rapport entre elles, comme on les trouve dans plusieurs des nouvelles méthodes.

Par suite de l'intérêt du sujet et de l'enchaîne ment des idées, dans ces VOCABULAIRES RATIONNELS, chaque phrase, une fois comprise, inspire le désir de

stood, suggests a desire to understand the following, and to persevere with the reading. The reverse occurs when the system of detached phrases is adopted. Nothing can be more wearisome and discouraging than the task it imposes upon the student. The narratives in our books are composed of expressions in daily use; they contain the phrases generally adopted, and thus the student will become familiarized with the most essential elements of conversation.

These first volumes will teach beginners, not only French words, but the expressions generally used in conversation. Thus, the two objects to be aimed at, in the practice of the first art, will be obtained; that is, the UNDERSTANDING OF THE WRITTEN LANGUAGE, AND THE ACQUIREMENT OF THE MEANS NECESSARY FOR THE EXPRESSION OF THOUGHT.

A text unknown to us can only be explained by one familiar to us and its equivalent. It is this equivalent, in other words, this translation, which a beginner requires, as he could not accomplish the task without it, from the fact of his being unable to interpret what he does not comprehend. In the mother-tongue, a child does not try to understand the sense of the phrases it hears, the signs conveyed by actions suggest it at once; gestures and expression of countenance are quicker than words. Thus it is with the foreign text; it will be needless to translate it, as it interprets itself.
