(x) John Hi. 3, 5, 6.-Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again he cannot see the kingdom of God. Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.

(L) John iii. 8.-The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh and whither it goeth; so is every one that is born of the Spirit.

4. Others not elected, although they may be called by the ministry of the Word, (M) and may have some common operations of the Spirit, yet not being effectually drawn by the Father, they neither will nor can truly (N) come to Christ, and therefore cannot be saved: much less can men that receive not the Christian religion (0) be saved, be they never so diligent to frame their lives according to the light of nature and the law of that religion they do profess.

(M) Matt. xxii. 14.-For many are called, but few are chosen. Chap. xiii. 20, 21.-But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it: yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended. Heb. vi. 4, 5.-For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come.

(N) John vi. 44, 45, 65.-No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me. And he said, therefore said I unto you, that no man can come unto me, except it were given unto him of my Father. 1 John ii. 24, 25.-Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning. If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, ye also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father. And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life.

(0) Acts iv. 12.-Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved. John iv. 22.Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. Chap. xvii. 3.—And this is eternal life, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

CHAP. XI.

OF JUSTIFICATION.

1. Those whom God effectually calleth, he also freely (A) justifieth, not by infusing righteousness into them, but (B) by pardoning their sins, and by accounting and accepting their persons as (c) righteous; nct for anything wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone; not by imputing faith itself, the act of believing, or any other (D) evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness; but by imputing Christ's active obedience unto the whole law, and passive obedience in his death for their whole and sole righteousness, they (E) receiving and resting on him and his righteousness by faith, which faith they have not of themselves; it is the gift of God.

(A) Rom. iii. 24.-Being justified freely by his grace, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. Chap. viii. 30.-Moreover whom he did predestinate them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.

(B) Rom. iv. 5, 6, 7, 8.-But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom Ged imputeth righteousness without works, Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. Eph. i. 7.-In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.

(c) 1 Cor. i. 30, 31.-But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. Rom. v. 17, 18, 19.-For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness, shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation ; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners; so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

(D) Phil. iii. 8, 9.-Yea, doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the Joss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, and be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. Eph. ii. 8, 9, 10.-For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: No: of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

(E) John i. 12.-But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. v. 17. For it by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace, and of the gift of righteousness, shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.

2. Faith thus receiving and resting on Christ and his righteousness, is the (F) alone instrument of justification; yet it is not alone in the person justified, but is ever accompanied with all other saving graces, and is no dead faith, (G) but worketh by love.

(F) Rom. iii. 28.-Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

(a) Gal. v. 6.- For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth any thing_nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love. James ii. 17, 22, 26.-Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect. For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

3. Christ, by his obedience and death, did fully discharge the debt of all those that are justified; and did, by the sacrifice of himself in the blocd of his cross, undergoing in their stead the penalty due unto them, make a proper, real, and full satisfaction (H) to God's justice in their behalf; yet, inasmuch as he was given by the Father for them, and his obedience and satisfaction accepted in their stead, and both (1) freely, not for anything in them, their justification is only of free grace, that both the exact justice and rich grace of God might be (K) glorified in the justification of sinners.

(H) Heb. x. 14.-For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. 1 Pet. i. 18, 19-Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish end without spot. Isa. liii. 5, 6.-But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for cur iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

(1) Rom. viii. 32.-He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 2 Cor. v. 21.-For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

(x) Rom. iii. 26.-To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness; that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. Eph. i. 6, 7.To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace. Chap. ii. 7.-That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace, in his kindness toward us through Jesus Christ.

4. God did from all eternity decree to (L) justify all the elect, and Christ did in the fulness of time die for their sins, and rise (M) again for their justification; nevertheless they are not justified personally, until the Holy Spirit doth in due time (N) actually apply Christ unto them.

(L) Gal. iii. 8.-And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel to Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 1 Pet. i. 2.-Elect according the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, anto obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace be multiplied. 1 Tim. ii. 6.— Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

(M) Rom. iv. 25.-Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

(N) Col. i. 21, 22.-And you, that were some time alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled in the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy, and unblameable, and unreprovable in his sight. Tit. iii. 4, 5, 6, 7.-But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

5. God doth continue to (o) forgive the sins of those that are justified, and although they can never fall from the state of (P) justification, yet they may, by their sins, fall under God's (q) fatherly displeasure; and in that condition they have not usually the light of his countenance restored unto them, until they (R) humble themselves, confess their sins, beg pardon, and renew their faith and repentance.

(0) Matt. vi. 12.-And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. 1 John i. 7,9.-But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(P) John x. 28. And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand

(Q) Ps. lxxxix. 31, 32, 33.-If they break my statutes and keep not my commandments; Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, and their iniquity with stripes. Nevertheless my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

(R) Ps. xxxii. 5.-I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah. Ps. li.-Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness; according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me, &c. Matt. xxvi. 75.-And Peter remembered the word of Jesus, which said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. And he went out and wept bitterly.

6. The justification of believers under the Old Testament was, in all these respects, (s) one and the same with the justification of believers under the New Testament.

(s) Gal. iii. 9.-So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. Rom. iv. 22, 23, 24.-And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. Now, it was not written for his sake alone that it was imputed to him; But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead.

CHAP. XII.

OF ADOPTION.

All those that are justified, God vouchsafed, in and for the sake of his only Son Jesus Christ, to make partakers of the grace (A) of adoption, by which they are taken into the number, and enjoy the liberties and (B) privileges of children of God, have his (c) name put upon them, (D) receive the Spirit of adoption, (E) have access to the throne of grace with boldness, are enabled to cry Abba, Father, are (F) pitied, (G) protected, (H) provided for, and (1) chastened by him as by a Father, yet never (K) cast off, but sealed (L) to the day of redemption, and inherit the promises (M) as heirs of everlasting salvation.

(A) Eph. i. 5.-Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will. Gal. iv. 4, 5.-But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

(B) John i. 12.-But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. Rom. viii. 17.-And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ, if so be that we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified together.

(c) 2 Cor. vi. 18.-And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty. Rev. iii. 12.-Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, which is new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God; and I will write upon him my new name.

(D) Rom. viii. 15. - For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry Abba, Father.

(E) Gal. iv. 6.-And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Eph. ii. 18.-For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

(F) Ps. ciii. 13.-Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

(G) Prov. xiv. 26.-In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence; and his children shall have a place of refuge.

(H) 1 Pet. v. 7.-Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

(1) Heb. xii. 6. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

(K) Isa. liv. 8, 9-In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer. For this is as the waters of Noah unto me: for as I have sworn that the waters of Noah should no more go over the earth; so have I sworn that I would not be wroth with thee, nor rebuke thee. Lam. iii. 31.-For the Lord will not cast off for ever.

(L) Eph. iv. 30.-And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

(M) Heb. i. 14. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation? Chap. vi. 12.-That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

CHAP. XIII.

OF SANCTIFICATION.

1. They who are united to Christ, effectually called, and regenerated, having a new heart and a new spirit created in them through the virtue of Christ's death and resurrection, are also (A) farther sanctified, really and personally, through the same virtue, (B) by his Word and Spirit dwelling in them; (c) the dominion of the whole body of sin is destroyed, (D) and the several lusts thereof are more and more weakened and mortified, and they more and more quickened and (E) strengthened in all saving graces, to the (F) practice of all true holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

(A) Acts xx. 32.-And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. Rom. vi. 5, 6.-For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

(B) John xvii. 17.-Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. Eph. iii. 16, 17, 19.-That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God. 1 Thess. v. 21, 22, 23.-Prove all things: hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(c) Rom. iv. 14.-For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect.

(D) Gal. v. 24.-And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

(E) Col. i. 11.-Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness.

(F) 2 Cor. vii. 1.-Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Heb. xii. 14.-Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord.

2. This sanctification is (G) throughout in the whole man, yet imperfect (H) in this life; there abideth still some remnants of corruption in every part, whence ariseth a (1) continual and irreconcilable war; the flesh lusting against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh.

(G) 1 Thess. v. 23.-And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

(H) Rom. vii. 18, 23.-For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

(1) Gal. v. 17.-For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other; so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. 1 Pet. ii. 11.-Dearly beloved, I beseech you, as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul.
