A. The cighth Commandment forbiddeth whatsoever doth or may

A. The tenth Coinmandment is,—Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wile, nor his manservant, nor his maid-sei vant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's. (P)

Q. 85. What is required in the tenth Commandment ?

A. The tenth Commandment requireth full contentment with our own condition, (Q) with a right and charitable frame of spirit towards our neighbour, and all that is his. (R)

Q 86. What is forbidden in the tenth Commandment ?

Q. 87. Is any man able perfectly to keep the Commandments of God?

A. No mere man since the fall is able in this life perfectly to keep the Commandments of God, (w) but doth daily brcak' them in thought, (x) word, (y) or deed. (1)

(w) Eccles. vii. 20.-There is not a just man upon earth, that doeth good and sinneth not. 1 John i. 8.-If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

(x) Gen. vi. 5.-And God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

(Y) James iii. 8.—The tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison,

(z) James iii. 2.-In many things we offend all.
Q. 88. Are all Transgressions of the law equally heinous ?

A. Some sins in themselves, and by reason of several aggravations, are more heinous in the sight of God than others. (A)

(A) Ezek. viii, 13.-Turn thee yet again, and thou shalt see greater abominations that they do. John xix. 11.--He that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. 1 John v. 16.-There is a sin unto death.

Q. 89. What doth every sin deserve ?

A. Every sin deserveth God's wrath and curse, both in this life and that which is to come. (B)

(B) Eph. v. 6.-Let no man deceive you with vain words, for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. Prov. iii. 33.The curse of the Lord is in the house of the wicked. Psal. xi. 6.- Upon the wicked he shall rain snares, fire, and brimstone, and an horrible tempest: This shall be the portion of their cup. Rev. xxi. 8.-The fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.

Q. 90. What doth God require of us, that we may escape his Wrath and Curse, due to us for Sin ?

A. To escape the Wrath and Curse of God, due to us for Sin, God requireth of us faith in Jesus Christ, (c) repentance unto life,(D) with the diligent use of all the outward means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of Redemption. (E)

(c) Acts xvi. 30, 31.--Sirs! What must I do to be saved ? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.

(D) Acts xvii. 30.—And the times of this ignorance God winked at, but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent.

(8) Prov. ii. 3, 4,5.-If thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding : If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasure; then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God. Prov. viii. 34, 35.--Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors. For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the Lord.

Q. 91. What is faith in Jesus Christ ?

A. Faith in Jesus Christ is a saving grace, (F) whereby we receive, (G) and rest upon him alone for Salvation, as he is offered to us in the Gospel. (1)

(F) Heb. x. 39,–We are not of them who draw back unto perdition, but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.

(6) John i. 12.-As many as received him, to them gave he power to become the Bons of God, even to them that believe on his name.

(H) Phil. iii. 9.–And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness which is of the law, but that which is, through the Faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by Faith.

Q. 92. What is Repentance unto Life ?

A. Repentance unto Life is a saving grace, (I) whereby a sinner, out of a true sense of his sins, (K) and apprehension of the mercy of God in Christ, (L) doth with grief, and hatred of his sin, turn from it unto God, (M) with full purpose of, and endeavour after, new Obedience, (N)

(1) Acts xi. 18.-Then hath God also to the Gentiles granted Repentance unto Life.

(K) Acts ii. 37.--When they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto "eter, and to the rest of the Apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

(1) Joel ii. 13.--Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the Lord your God : for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.

(M) Jer. xxxi. 18, 19 —Turn thou me, and I shall be turnel, for thou art the Lord my God. Surely after that I was turned, I repentel; and after that I was instructed. I sinote upon nay thigh; I was ashamed, yea, eren confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

(N) Pral. cxis. 59, 60.-I thvuglit on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimon es : I made haste, and delaye1 not to keep thy commandments.

Q. 93. What are the outward Means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of Redemption ?

A. The outward and ordinary Means whereby Christ communicateth to us the benefits of Redemption, are his Ordinances, especially the Word, Baptism, the Lord's Supper, and Prayer ; all which Means are made effectual to the Elcct for Salvation. (0)

(0) Acts ji. 41, 42.-Then they that gladly received his Word were baptized, And the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls, and they continued stedfastly in the Apostle's doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread and in prayers. Psal. xcii. 13. 14.-Those that he pla..ted in the huuse ot the Lord, shall flourish in the courts of our God: They shall still bring forth fruit in old age, they shall be fat and flourishing.

Q. 91, How is the Word made effectual to Salvation ?

A. The Spirit of God maketh the reading, (P) but especially the preaching of the Word, an effectual means of convincing and converting sinners. (Q) and of building them up in holiness and comfort, (R) through faith unto Salvation, (s)

(P) Neh. viii. 8.–They read in the book in the law of Gol distinctly. Psal. xix. 7.-The law of the Lord is periect, converting the soul: The testimony of the ord is sure, making wise the siin ule.

(Q) Psrl. li 13 - The will I teach transgressors thy ways, and sinners shall be convert-d unto thee. Rom. x. 14, 17.-llow shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard ?- Faith cometh by hearing.

(R) Acts xx. 32.-1 commend you io Gd, and to the Word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctitied. lvor. xiv. 3.- He that prophesicth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort.

(8) Rom. i. 16.-I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ, for it is the power of cod unto salvation to every oue that believeth.

Q 95. How is the Word to be read and heard, that it may become cffectual to Salvation ?

A. That the Word may become effectual to Salvation, we must attend thereto with diligence, (T) preparation, (u) and prayer, (w) receive it with faith, (x) and love, (y) lay it up in our hearts, (z) and practise it in our lives. (A)

(T) 1 Tim iv. 13.-,ive attendance to reading. Heb. ii. 1.-We ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard.

(U)! Pet. ii. 1, 2.-W'herefore, laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypicrisies, and envies, and all evil-speakings, as new-born babes, desire the sincere milk of the Word, that ye may grow th-reby.

(w) Poal cxix. 18.-Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out or thy law.

(x) Heb. iv. 2.-The Word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in ihem that heard it.

(y) 2 Thess. il. 10.-They received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.

(z) Psal. cxix. 11.-Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sià against thee.

(A) James i. 25.—But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the Word, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

Q. 96. How do Baptism and the Lord's Supper become effectual means of Salvation ?

A. Baptism and the Lord's Supper become effectual means of Salvation, not from any virtue in them, or in him that doth administer them, (B) but only by the blessing of Christ, (c) and the working of the Spirit in those that by faith receive them. (D)

(B) 1 Cor. iii. 7.-So then, neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth : but God that giveth the increase. 1 Pet. iii. 21.-The like figure whereunto even Baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience towards God) by the Resurrecti n of Jesus Christ. (c) 1 Cor. iii. 6.-I have planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase.

D) 1 Cor. xii. 13.-By one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

Q. 97. What is Baptism ?

A. Baptism is an Ordinance of the New Testament, instituted by Jesus Christ, (E) to be unto the party baptized a sign of his fellowship with him, in his death, and burial, and resurrection, (F) of his being ingrafted into him, (G) of remission of sins, (u) and of his giving up himself unto God through Jesus Christ, to live and walk in newness of life.

(E) Mat. xxviii. 19.-Go ye, therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.

(F) Rom. vi. 3.-Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ, were baptized into his death ? Col. ii. 12.—Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him.

(@) Gal. iii. 27.-As many of you as have been baptized into Christ, have put on Christ.

() Mark i. 4.-John did baptize in the wilderness, and preach the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins. Acts xxii. 16.-And now, why tarriest thou? Arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.

(1) Rom. vi. 4, 5.—Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death, that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection.

Q. 98. To whom is Baptism to be administered ?

A. Baptism is to be administered to all those who actually profess repentance towards God, (K) faith in, and obedience to, our Lord Jesus Christ, and to none other.

(K) Acts ii. 38.-Then Peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized, every one of you. Mat. iii. 6.-And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins. Mark xvi. 16.-He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. Acts viii. 12, 36, 37:—When they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women --See, here is water, what doth hinder me to be baptized? And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. Acts x. 47, 48.-Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord.
