PREFACE.

This small Volume is a summary, set in grammatical order, of the Rules contained in the Author's First French Course, Second French Course and Reader, and French Exercises for Advanced Pupils.

It is divided into two PARTS: in the FIRST are the elementary Rules and Accidence given in the First Course, with figures referring to the exercises illustrating them; in the SECOND, the Rules of Syntax will be found along with explanations of difficulties.

Students of the SECOND PART are strongly recommended to carefully revise, before beginning a new chapter, or subdivision of chapter, the corresponding chapter or subdivision in the FIRST PART, so as not to leave behind anything unexplained or not understood, but to master each subject thoroughly.

To add that such aim cannot be reached without practice is scarcely required: copious exercises, consisting in translations both from English and French, are as necessary as a sound knowledge of the Rules themselves.
