xxvii. 64. VUKTÓS is deficient in most of the best manuscripts, versions, and some fathers. It has been rejected by Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield.

xxviii. 2. άπò Ts Oúpas. These words are cancelled by Lachmann and Tischendorf, but from weak authority.

xxviii. 9. ὡς δὲ ἐπορεύοντο ἀπαγγεῖλαι τοῖς μαθηταῖς avToû. This clause has been cancelled by Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Alford, but, in the judgment of Bloomfield, from inadequate evidence.

xxviii. 14. "To the governor's ears," would be better translated, "to the hearing of the governor," having reference to a judicial inquiry, rather than to a current report. So read Bloomfield and Dean Trench.

xxviii. 16. eis Tò opos. These words are deficient in several manuscripts, and Bloomfield considers them to have been inserted in the text from the margin.

xxviii. 19. Instead of "teach all nations," the translation of "make disciples" has been preferred, which is the signification of μαθητεύσατε, since διδάσκοντες follows in the next verse, and involves educational instruction in the truths of Christianity. ovv is cancelled by Griesbach, Scholz, and Tischendorf.

Chap. i. ver. 2. èv тoîs πρоÓýτais. The reading év Ἡσαΐᾳ τῷ προφήτῃ is adopted by Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield, from a comparison of the best manuscripts and ancient versions.

i. 6. Čávnv Sepμaтívny, "a girdle of a skin;" rather, a leathern girdle." See Matt. iii. 4. So Scholefield.

i. 16. auтoû. Most of the ancient manuscripts and the Lambeth and Museum copies read, with Scholz, Lachmann, Tischendorf, Bloomfield, and Alford, Zipwvos. In the same verse the reading of παράγων is adopted for περιπατῶν, and ἀμφιβάλλοντας for βάλλοντας.

ii. 8. αὐτοί is inserted before διαλογίζονται by Wetstein, Matthæi, Scholz, Tischendorf, Alford, and Bloomfield, from nearly the whole of the uncial and very many cursive manuscripts, the Syriac, Gothic, and Sclavonic versions, editio princeps, and Theophylact.

ii. 20. ékeívais τaîs ýμépais. Mill, Bengel, Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield read ẻkeívy tŷ ýμépą, from considerable evidence of manuscripts, including two Lambeth and three Museum copies.

iii. 5, and Luke vi. 10. vyns is n äλλn, are wanting in six uncial, many other manuscripts, most versions, and some fathers. They have been rejected by Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield, as being introduced from the parallel text of Matt. xii. 13.

iii. 16. πртоv Zipova are here inserted by Beza, Newcome, Scott, Campbell, and others.

iii. 19. 'Iσκαριτnv. Lachmann and Tischendorf read 'Ioxapie, as in Matt. x. 4 and Luke vi. 16.

iii. 29. Kрíσews. Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Alford read ȧμaρτýμаτos from insufficient evidence.

iii. 31. pwvoûνTES. Lachmann and Tischendorf read Kaλoûνтes, which Bloomfield considers a gloss.

iv. 4. τοῦ οὐρανοῦ are deficient in very many manuscripts, editio princeps, and most versions. They have been cancelled by Mill, Bengel, Wetstein, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel. Bloomfield considers that they have been introduced from the other Gospels.

iv. 9. autoîs is omitted by Griesbach et rel., and Vulgate.

iv. 18. ovτoí elow. The repetition of these words is not found in many manuscripts, several versions and fathers. It has been rejected by the Elzevir edition, Wetstein, Matthæi, and Bloomfield. For the first ovTo Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Alford read aλdoi.

iv. 21. ἐπιτεθῇ. Lachmann and Tischendorf read τεθῇ.

iv. 24. The words Toîs àkovovov, in the opinion of Bloomfield, are rashly cancelled by Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Alford.

iv. 30. ἐν ποία παραβολῇ παραβάλωμεν αὐτήν. Lachmann and Tischendorf read ἐν τίνι αὐτὴν παραβολῇ θῶμεν.

iv. 37. αὐτὸ ἤδη γεμίζεσθαι. Lachmann and Tischendorf edit ἤδη γεμίζεσθαι τὸ πλοῖον.

v. 7. elπe. Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Alford read

λéyet, from several uncial and cursive manuscripts. In verse 9 ἀπεκρίθη λέγων, Griesbach et rel. have λέγει αὐτῷ, with many Mss. and versions.

v. 11. πρὸς τὰ ὄρη. The reading πρὸς τῷ ὄρει is found in the greater part of the manuscripts and versions, the Lambeth and Museum copies, being confirmed by Luke viii. 32. It has been adopted by Wetstein, Bengel, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield.

v. 12. πávτes is wanting in many manuscripts, all the best versions, and has been rejected by Griesbach, Scholz, Tischendorf, and Bloomfield.

v. 14. ȧvýyyeiλav. Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield read ἀπήγγειλαν.

vi. 11. ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν· ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται Σοδόμοις ἢ Γομόῤῥοις ἐν ἡμέρᾳ κρίσεως ἢ τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ. This sentence is rejected by Erasmus, Beza, Mill, Griesbach, Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Bloomfield, as an interpolation from Matt. x. 14, being absent from some ancient Mss,, the Italic, Arabic, Coptic, and Armenian versions.

vi. 33. oi oxλo are scarcely found in any manuscripts, and have been rejected by Mill, Wetstein, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield. The words, kaì σvvĥov πρòs avτóν, are omitted in the same verse.

vi. 56. év Taîs ȧyopaîs, "in the streets;" rather, "in the market-places." So Scholefield.

vii. 2. èμéμyaνTo is wanting in several manuscripts, and some versions, being rejected by Mill, Bengel, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield.

vii. 3. Tuyμn is rendered by the adverb "oft" in English, and "diligently" in the marginal reference; but both are incorrect. Drs. Hammond and Whitby read "up to the wrist;" or, according to Liddell and Scott, the measure of the arm from the elbow to the knuckles. Dr. Smith gives the length of the Greek πʊуμý as 1·13,766 f., the Txus 1.5169 f., and the Latin cubitus 1-4562 f. The Italian version of Diodati has, le mani fino al cubito; and the French, jusqu'au coude.

vii. 4. Kλvov. The word "tables" should be rather translated "beds" or "couches," upon which the Orientals reposed when taking their meals, as in the margin; and so reads Dean Trench. It was customary with the Jews to wash these articles of household furniture, lest any unclean person might have sat upon them. The Vulgate has lectorum. See Drs. Doyley and Mant in loco, and Le Clerc.

vii. 14. πáντα. Lachmann, Tischendorf, and Alford read ráλiv; but the Peschito Syriac, Arabic and Persic versions, and almost all the manuscripts, confirm the present reading.

vii. 24. Týv is cancelled by Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield.

vii. 26. Zupopoívicoa. Matthæi, Scholz, Lachmann, Συροφοίνισσα. Tischendorf, Bloomfield, and Alford read Zupopovíkiσσa οι Συραφοινίκισσα.
