Thesaurus. In ver. 18 the same word is used in the sense οἱ ἀπαρχὴ τῶν κεκοιμημένων in 1 Cor. xv. 20.

ii. 2. καὶ πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ Χριστοῦ. These important words have been cancelled by Griesbach et rel.; though in the estimation of Bloomfield there is no justifiable reason for the omission of any one.

ii. 11. The words Tv ȧuaρтiv are omitted by Griesbach et rel. and Vulgate, but are extant in the majority of cursive Mss., the Peschito Syriac and Arabic versions, and many ancient fathers.

ii. 23. "Not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh." This version of the original is by no means intelligible. The apostle here distinguishes σópaтos from σaprós, as if the former were applied in an honourable, and the latter in a dishonourable sense. Moreover, TλnOμovýν, with which the last is coupled, rightly bears the signification of "pampering." The preposition Tρós in Platonic Greek marks relationship ; as τὰ πρὸς τὸν πόλεμον, πρÒS TOÙS EOús, military or religious matters. The words might be thus translated: "not being of any value in respect to the fulness of the flesh." our ev Tμn Tivi, i.e. the system of human doctrines and commandments, willworship and voluntary humility, has not effectual influence in subduing the excess and repletion of natural passions. To the same purpose Aquinas, Messrs. Conybeare and Howson, Dean Trench, Archbishop Sumner, and Professor Scholefield. Bloomfield otherwise understands them, "in regard to the wants of the flesh," viz. in satisfying its just requirements. So Chrysostom, Theophylact, Theodoret, Ecumenius, and Calvin.

iii. 8. vvvì dè àтóleσ0e. This verb is mis-translated as if it were in the indicative instead of the imperative mood. So Scholefield.

iii. 12. оixтipμov. Many good Mss. and almost all the early editions read oixтipμoû, which has been adopted by every critic from Bengel to Bloomfield.

iii. 18. idiots is omitted by Griesbach et rel. and Vulgate.

iii. 22. ¿plaλμodovλciais. Many of the most ancient ὀφθαλμοδουλείαις. Mss., with Chrysostom and Theophylact, have ỏplaλμoSovλeía, which is edited by Bengel, Scholz, Lachmann, and Bloomfield, and agrees with the parallel expression in Eph. vi. 6. For eóv in the same verse, Griesbach et rel. read Κύριον.

iv. 10. ȧveriós. This word has been rendered "sister's son." Messrs. Conybeare and Howson assert that its meaning in classical and Hellenistic Greek is not "nephew" but "cousin."

iv. 12. XpισToû. Lachmann and Tischendorf add 'Inooû. So also the Vulgate.

iv. 13. λov Toλúv. Griesbach et rel. read Toλv Tóvov. So also the Vulgate.

Chap. i. ver. 7. TÚTTOUS. Lachmann and Tischendorf read TÚTOV, with a few uncial, seven cursive Mss., the Peschito Syriac, Vulgate, and Italic versions.

i. 9. exoμev. Almost all Mss. and early editions read eoxoμev, which has been followed by Bengel, Grotius, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield.

i. 10. Tòv рvóμevov, "which delivered;" rather, "who τὸν ῥυόμενον, delivereth." So Scholefield.

ii. 2. kai after aλλá is cancelled by Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield, being absent from all the uncial and very many cursive Mss., all the Lambeth and Museum copies.

ii. 8. iμepóμevou. Matthæi, Griesbach et rel. read oμelpóμevor, with almost all the uncial, thirty cursive Mss., and two Lambeth copies.

ii. 15. idious has been unwarrantably cancelled by Griesbach et rel. in the judgment of Bloomfield.

iv. 1. Tó before λouTóv is cancelled by Griesbach et rel.

iv. 6. τ πрáуμari, "in any matter;" rather, "in the matter." See margin. So Bishop Middleton and Scholefield.

II. THESSALONIANS.

πιστεύουσιν.

Chap. i. ver. 10. TOTEUοVOLV. Many uncial and cursive Mss., one Lambeth, one Museum, and others, versions, fathers, and early editions have πOTEÚσaow; which has been adopted by Bengel, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield.

ii. 1. ὑπὲρ τῆς παρουσίας should be translated “ concerning" instead of "by," the latter being simply adjunctive. So Schleusner, Macknight, and Whitby.

ii. 2. Xρισтοû. Griesbach et rel. read Kuplov; and so the Vulgate.

ii. 3. άπоσтаoía, "a falling away;" rather, "the apostasy," as in ver. 11, τ@ yeúde, "the lie." So Schole

field.

ii. 4. os eóv. These words are wanting in three uncial, ten cursive, and other Mss., several ancient versions and early Greek fathers, and have been rejected by Griesbach et rel., Messrs. Conybeare and Howson, and Bloomfield.

ii. 7. μόνον ὁ κατέχων ἄρτι, ἕως ἐκ μέσου γένηται, "only he who now letteth will let, until he be taken out of the way;" rather, "only there is one that now withholdeth it, until he be taken out of the way." So Scholefield.

The Pagan empire of Rome, before the rise and establishment of the papal antichrist, is here described.

ii. 8. After Kúpios Griesbach et rel. add 'Inooûs, from six uncial codices, so also the Vulgate; but this word is wanting in the great majority of cursive Mss., and Tischendorf in his second edition has removed it.
