Chap. i. ver. 5. èπayyeλía. Many Mss., versions, fathers, and early editions have ȧyyeλía, which is edited by Wetstein, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield.

ii. 7. àdeλpoí. Griesbach et rel. read ayaπηтоí. The Vulgate has charissimi, being the superlative adjective without the substantive.

ii. 13. γράφω. Lachmann and Tischendorf read ἔγραψα, from four uncial, very many cursive Mss., some Lambeth and Museum copies.

ii. 23. ὁ ὁμολογῶν τὸν υἱόν, καὶ τὸν πατέρα ἔχει. The addition of this important clause, the English translation of which is printed in italics, is found in most Mss., including two Lambeth and two Museum copies, versions, and fathers, and has been edited by Bengel, Matthæi, Griesbach et rel., and Bloomfield. The Vulgate has, qui confitetur filium, et patrem habet.

iii. 14. tòv ådeλpóv. These words, not found in a few ancient Mss. and several fathers, have been cancelled by Lachmann and Tischendorf, but Bloomfield considers from insufficient evidence.

iv. 3. Χριστὸν ἐν σαρκὶ ἐληλυθότα. These words, repeated from ver. 2, are omitted by Griesbach et rel. and Vulgate.

ν. 2. τηρῶμεν. Lachmann and Tischendorf read ποιώμev, from several ancient Mss. and one Lambeth copy.

v. 7. The much-litigated passage of the three heavenly witnesses, which received the sanction of Mill, Wetstein, Ernesti, Bengel, Drs. Hales and Macknight, together with Bishop Middleton so far as it is dependent on the rendering of the Greek article, and was so energetically defended and maintained by the late Bishop Burgess, has been since adjudicated by the law of evidence on the side of Porson, Bishop Marsh, Dean Turton, Mr. Horne, and Bloomfield, to be a Latin gloss. The only Greek Ms. of repute in its favour is the Codex Montfortianus, of Trinity College, Dublin, to which the date of the fifteenth century is assigned. From the strength, however, of its internal testimony, and antithetical contrast with the earthly witnesses, it ought not peremptorily to be discarded, but may still be allowed to form a part either of the bracketed text, or a marginal comment.

ν. 13. ταῦτα ἔγραψα ὑμῖν, ἵνα εἰδῆτε ὅτι ζωὴν αἰώνιον ἔχετε οἱ πιστεύοντες εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ. This is the reading of Griesbach et rel., the duplicate clause, which is unnecessary, being omitted, while the verse is thereby rendered more concise, and not less emphatic. In like manner the Vulgate, hæc scribo vobis, ut sciatis quoniam vitam habetis æternam, qui creditis in nomine filii Dei.

ὅτι ἀκούει

uv, "that he hear us;" rather,

"that he heareth us." So Scholefield.

v. 19. év τ

wicked one."

II. JOHN.

Ver. 8. ἀπολέσωμεν ἃ εἰργασάμεθα. Lachmann and Tischendorf read ἀπολέσητε ἃ εἰργάσασθε, and for ἀπολάβωμεν they have ἀπολάβητε, from several ancient Mss., being the second person instead of the first plural, which is more in unison with the context, though Bloomfield objects to it. The Vulgate has, ne perdatis quæ operati estis, sed ut mercedem plenam accipiatis.

9. For Tapaẞaívov Lachmann and Tischendorf read πроáуwν, which Bloomfield suspects to have been a fault of the copyist for παράγων. The words τοῦ Χριστοῦ are cancelled from inadequate evidence.

12. "And speak face to face." The margin reads more literally, "mouth to mouth," and has "your joy" instead of " our joy."

III. JOHN.

Ver. 8. amoλaußáveiv. Lachmann and Tischendorf read voλaμẞáve on the authority of three uncial, nine cursive Mss., and with Theophylact and Ecumenius, which Bloomfield prefers.

JUDE.

Ver. 1. yaoμévois. Lachmann and Tischendorf read nyaжημévois, on the authority of a few Mss., the Vulgate, Syriac, Coptic, and other versions, together with some fathers; but Bloomfield considers it to be a marginal scholium.

4. καὶ τὸν μόνον δεσπότην Θεὸν καὶ Κύριον ἡμῶν Ιησοῦν Χριστὸν ἀρνούμενοι. The word δεσπότην is incorrectly translated; and the whole is thus rendered by Scholefield: "and denying the only Master, our God and Lord, Jesus Christ." To the same effect Mr. Horne. The use here of the Greek article is conformable to the rule laid down by Mr. Granville Sharp and Bishop Middleton. Griesbach et rel. omit Ocóv.

5. ὑμᾶς after εἰδότας is cancelled by Lachmann and Tischendorf, from three uncial and sixteen cursive Mss.

11. "Core" ought to be written "Korah;" as "Noe," in Matt. xxiv. 38, "Noah."

12. Tеρipeрóμeval. Griesbach et rel. and Bloomfield read Taрapeрóμeval, with most uncial and cursive Mss., all the Lambeth and many Museum copies. In the same verse, dévdpa plivоπwρivá, " trees whose fruit withereth," should be rather translated "autumnal." The Vulgate has arbores autumnales, which is followed by акаρжа,

"fruitless;" dìs àπоlavóvта, "twice dead;" and expięwOévτa, "uprooted." The whole sentence is a climax comθέντα, pounded of four terms. The Attic month was divided into three decades, μὴν ἱστάμενος, μέσων, φθίνων; and the season of ivóπwрov was therefore the last part of ỏπóρа, "autumn.” ὀπώρα, So read Bengel, Bloomfield, and

Dean Trench.

19. After ἀποδιορίζοντες the word ἑαυτούς is found in the great body of Mss. and the Elzevir edition, which is adopted by Griesbach and Scholz.

22. ἐλεεῖτε. Lachmann and Tischendorf edit ἐλέγχετε, from two uncial, fourteen cursive Mss., some versions, Theophylact, and Ecumenius; but Bloomfield retains the present text.

25. This doxology, which is the finest in all the apostolic epistles, is worded in fuller and more forcible diction by Griesbach et rel., σοφῷ being omitted. μόνῳ Θεῷ σωτῆρι ἡμῶν, διὰ Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν, δόξα καὶ μεγαλωσύνη, κράτος καὶ ἐξουσία, πρὸ παντὸς τοῦ αἰῶνος, καὶ νῦν, καὶ εἰς πάντας τοὺς αἰῶνας. So likewise reads the Vulgate. Soli Deo salvatori nostro, per Jesum Christum, Dominum nostrum, gloria et magnificentia, imperium et potestas, ante omne sæculum, et nunc, et in omnia sæcula sæculorum.
