DIRECTIONS for MORNING.

HEN thou awakeft from thy

fleep, fuffer not (without fome urgent neceffity) any worldly thoughts to fill thy mind, till thou haft first paid thy more folemn devctions to almighty God; and therefore during the time that thou art dreffing thyself (which should be no longer than common decency requires) exercife thy mind in fome fpiritual thoughts. Confider (for example) to what temptations thy business VOL. III.

or company that day are most like to lay thee opeu, and arm thyself with refolutions against them ; or confider what occafions of doing fervice to God, or good to thy neighbour are, that day, most likely to prefent themselves, and refolve to cmbrace them, and also contrive how thou mayeft improve them to the uttermoft. But efpecially, it will be fit for thee to examine whether there have been any fins efcaped thee finge thy last night's examination. If, after thefe confiderations, any further leifure remains, thou mayeft profitably employ it in meditating on the general refurrection (whereof our rising from our beds is a representation) and of that dreadful judgment which shall follow it ; and then think with thyself in what preparation thou art for it, and refolve to husband carefully every minute of thy time towards the fitting thee for that great account. As foon as thou art ready, retire to fome private place, and there offer up to God thy morning facrifice of praise and prayer.

PEN my mouth, O moft glorious and incomprehenfible Lord God, to blefs and praise thy divine Majefty; cleanfe my heart from all loofe, wandring, and distracting thoughts; enlighten my underftanding, help my memory, inflame my will, purify my intentions, excite my devotion, elevate my affections, and compofe and difcipline every faculty of my foul and body.

That I may worthily, reverently, and religiously perform this my morning facrifice, and that, in vertue of that most pure and perfect prayer, which thou, O bleffed Redeemer! living upon earth, didft offer up to thy eternal Father, faying,

Our Father, &c.
