THE PSALMS.

PSALM XXIV.

THE earth is the Lord's, and all that therein is;

therein.

*

For He hath founded it upon the seas, *and prepared it upon the floods.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord; shall rise up in His holy place?

*

or who

*

Even he that hath clean hands, and a pure heart, and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to deceive his neighbour.

He shall receive the blessing from the Lord; righteousness from the God of his salvation.

This is the generation of them that seek Him; of them that seek thy face, O Jacob.

*

and

even

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.

[ocr errors]

Who is the King of glory? it is the Lord strong and mighty, even the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates, and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. Who is the King of glory? * even the Lord of hosts,

He is the King of glory.

PSALM XXX.

WILL magnify Thee, O Lord, for Thou hast set Me up, * and not made My foes to triumph over Me. O Lord My God, I cried unto Thee; * and Thou hast healed Me.

Thou, Lord, hast brought My soul out of hell:* Thou hast kept My life from them that go down to the pit.

Sing praises unto the Lord, O ye saints of His ; * and give thanks unto Him for a remembrance of His holi

ness.

For His wrath endureth but the twinkling of an eye, and in His pleasure is life: * heaviness may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

And in My prosperity I said, I shall never be removed; Thou, Lord, of Thy goodness hast made My hill so strong.

Thou didst turn Thy face from Me, * and I was troubled.

*

Then cried I unto Thee, O Lord; and gat Me to My Lord right humbly.

*

What profit is there in My blood, when I go down to the pit?

*

Shall the dust give thanks unto Thee, or shall it declare Thy truth?

Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon Me; * Lord, be Thou My helper.

Thou hast turned My heaviness into joy; * Thou hast put off My sackcloth, and girded Me with gladness. Therefore shall every good man sing of Thy praise without ceasing: * O My God, I will give thanks unto Thee for ever.

At Salem is His tabernacle, and His dwelling in Sion.

There brake He the arrows of the bow,

the sword, and the battle.

* the shield,

Thou art of more honour and might, * than the hills of the robbers.

The proud are robbed, they have slept their sleep; and all the men whose hands were mighty have found nothing.

At Thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are fallen.

Thou, even Thou art to be feared; * and who may stand in Thy sight when Thou art angry?

Thou didst cause Thy judgment to be heard from heaven: * the earth trembled, and was still,

When God arose to judgment, * and to help all the meek upon earth.

The fierceness of man shall turn to Thy praise; and the fierceness of them shalt Thou refrain.

Promise unto the Lord your God, and keep it, all ye that are round about Him; * bring presents unto Him that ought to be feared.

He shall refrain the spirit of princes; derful among the kings of the earth.

THE LESSON.

S. MARK, XVI. 1—8.

AND when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and

Mary the Mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint the Body of Jesus. And very early in the morning, the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. And

entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: He is risen; He is not here: behold the place where they laid Him. But go your way, tell His disciples and Peter that He goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see Him, as He said unto you. And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they anything to any man; for they were afraid. But Thou.

THE COLLECT.

ALMIGHTY God, Who through Thine only-begotten

Son Jesus Christ hast overcome death, and opened unto us the gate of everlasting life; we humbly beseech Thee, that, as by Thy special grace preventing us Thou dost put into our minds good desires, so by Thy continual help we may bring the same to good effect; through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
