This is the first full-scale translation and commentary in English of Aurelius Victor's De Caesaribus, which provides a brief survey of the emperors of Rome from Augustus in 30 B.C. to Constantius II in A.D. 360. The book includes discussions of the work's date of composition, sources, methodology, and style. The translation is accompanied by full historical and historiographical commentary.

H. W. Bird is Professor of Classics at the University of Windsor, Ontario (Universtiy Research Professor, 1992-93). Having served in the Royal Navy, he studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, McMaster University and the University of Toronto. He has since taught at a number of universities inEngland, Finland and Canada. H. W. Bird is the author of Sextus Aurelius Victor: A Historiographical (Liverpool, Francis Cairns) and he translated and commentated on Eutropius: Breviarium (Translated Texts for Historians 14).
