L'AMOUR ME'DECIN, comédie en trois actes en profe, représentée à Versailles le 15 septembre 1665, & à Paris fur le théatre du palais royal le 22 du même mois. L 'AMOUR Médecin, eft un de ces ouvrages précipités, que l'on ne doit point juger avec rigueur. La brouillerie entre la femme de Moliere, & celle d'un médecin chez qui elle logeoit, quand elle feroit bien avérée, paroît un motif trop peu important pour avoir, comme on l'a dit, déterminé Moliere à mettre depuis les médecins fi fouvent fur la fcéne. Choqué du maintien grave, des dehors étudiés, & du vain étalage de mots scientifiques que les médecins de fon tems affectoient, pour en imposer au public, il a cru pouvoir tirer de leur ridicule un fonds de comique plus amufant, à la vérité, qu'inftructif. Auffi les médecins, & les marquis, qu'il a peints plufieurs fois dans des attitudes diverfes, ne font-ils jamais la principale figure du tableau. Lorsqu'il avoit en vue de corriger un ridicule plus effentiel, ou un vice contraire à la fociété, il réservoit la premiére place pour un de ces caracteres finguliers qui méritent par euxmêmes de fixer toute l'attention. 30 LovE's the best DOCTOR, a Comedy of three Acts in Profe, acted at Versailles, September 15, 1665, and at Paris at the Theatre of the Palace-Royal the 22d of the Same Month. L OVE's the best Doctor, is one of those hafty Pieces which we ought not to criticize upon with too much Severity. The Quarrel between Moliere's Wife, and the Wife of a Phyfician with whom fhe lodg'd, tho' never fo well attefted, appears too trifling a Motive to determine Moliere, as it is faid it did, to bring the Phyficians fo often afterwards on the Stage. Being difgufted with the folemn Countenance, ftudious Appearances, and vain Pomp of Technical Terms, which the Phyficians of his time affected, in order to impofe on the Publick, he thought he could draw from thence a Fund of Comic Humour, more entertaining indeed than inftructive; for which reafon the Phyficians and the Marquifes, whom he has often painted in different Attitudes, are never the Principal Figures in the Piece. Whenever he intended to reprove a more effential Folly, or any Vice that was injurious to Society, he referv'd the first Place for one of those fingular Characters which deferv'd to have all the Attention fix'd on themselves. |
