236. II. The Imperative va takes s before y, if the latter is not followed by an infinitive: vas-y, go thither; with an infinitive: va y mettre ordre, go and put it in order.

237. III. J'ai été, j'avais été, j'aurais été, are sometimes used for je suis allé, j'étais allé, je serais allé; but the verb être expresses that one has returned from the place, whilst aller means that one is still there; as, J'ai été à Paris, implies my return from it; il est allé à Paris, gives to understand that he is at present staying in that city.

Conquérir, to conquer.

This verb is seldom used but in the

Infinitive present, the Preterite, the imperfect of the Subjunctive, and compound tenses.

BENIR, to bless, is conjugated like finir. (See § 174.) This verb, which is otherwise regular, has two past participles, the one regular, béni, bénie; and the other irregular, bénit, bénite, used only when speaking of things consecrated by the prayers of the church; as, Du pain bénit, consecrated bread; de l'eau bénite, holy water.
