The Imperfect of the Indicative, the Future, the Conditional, and the Present of the Subjunctive, have always the terminations given in the table, of whatever conjugation the verb may be. 180. III. The terminations of the Imperfect of the Indicative and those of the Conditional are the same, with the difference of the letter R, which is employed in the inflections of the latter tense. 181. IV. The first and second person plural of the Preterite, and the third person singular of the Imperfect of the Subjunctive, have always a circumflex over the last vowel before the terminations MES, TES, T. 182. V. The following part of the terminations of the Imperfect Subjunctive, SSE, SSES, T, SSIONS, SSIEZ, SSENT, is always the same, and is adapted to the verbs of the different conjugations by prefixing the vowels A, I, or U, which is found throughout the terminations of their respective Preterites,—in this manner : CONJUGATION OF A VERB USED NEGATIVELY. 183. To conjugate a verb negatively, ne is placed before the verb, and pas after it, in simple tenses, except in the Infinitive present, when both negatives are generally put before the verb: in compound tenses, the auxiliary is preceded by ne, and followed by pas. 184. The same may be said of other negatives; such as, ne... point, not at all; ne... plus, no more, no longer; ne...jamais, never; ne... rien, nothing, &c. |
