A Game of Polo with a Headless Goat: In Search of the Ancient Sports of Asia

Couverture
André Deutsch, 2000 - 312 pages
"A Game of Polo with a Headless Goat is Emma Levine's account of her epic sporting adventure. She tracks down camels wrestling in Turkey and a vibrant horse and cattle festival in Pakistan. She finds bull racing in India and she is allowed inside a traditional Iranian gymnasium where men perform exercises to poetry and the beat of a drum. She travels to villages so isolated that her journeys take days and to festivals where western women are so rare that she is mobbed by onlookers. And everywhere she goes, she meets a myriad of people who act as the guardians of their ancient sports - who protect the traditions that have evolved over generations. While they recount the folklore that surrounds their local pastimes, Emma Levine examines the status of indigenous sports in a world dominated by satellite TV, the worldwide web and Manchester United. Are they sports of the past or sports of the future?".
