Of Free Will.
OD hath endued the will of man with that
natural liberty and power of acting upon choice, that it is neither forced, nor by any absolute necessity of nature determined to do good or evil. a

When God converts a sinner, and translates him into the state of gr ce, he freeth him from his natural bondage under sin h and by his grace alone enables him freely to will and to do that which is spiritually good ; í yet so as that by rason of his remaining corruption, he doth not perfectiy nor only will that which is good but doch Iso will that which is evil k

Of Effectual Calling
LL those whom God hath predestinates!
unto life, and those only he is pleased in his appointed and accepted time effectually to call a by his word and spirit, 6 out of that stale of sin and death in which they are by nature, to grace and salvation by Jesus Christ, c enlightening their minds spiritually and savingly to understand the things of God, d taking away their heart of stone, and giving unto them an heart of flesh. e Renewing their wills and by his almighty power determining them to that which is good, f and effectually drawing them to Jesus Christ: 3 yet so as they come most freely, being made willing by his grace.h

II. This effectual call is of God's free and special grace alone, not from any thing at all foreseen in man, i who is altogether passive therein, until being quickened and renewed by the holy Spirit, k he is thereby enabled to answer this Call, and to embrace the grace offered and conveyed in it. l.

III. Elect infants dying in infancy, are regenera. ted and saved by Christ, m who workeih when and where, and how he pleaseth ; 12 so also are all other elect persons who are incapable of being outwardly called by the ministry of the word. O

Others not elected, although they may be called by the spinistry of the word, p and may have sonse, common operations of the Spirit, q yet not being effectually drawn by the Father they neither do nor can come unto Christ, ind therefore cannot be saved ; r much less can men not professing the Christian Religion, be saved in any other way whatsoever be they never so duigent to frame their lives according to the light of nature, and the law of that religion
they lo profess ; 8 and to assert and maintain that they may, is very pernicious, and to be der tested. +

also freely justifieth, a not by infusing righteousness into them, but by paiduning their sins and by accounting and accepting their persons os righteous not for any thing wrought in them, or done by them, but for Christ's sake alone ; nor by imputing Faith itself, the act of believing, or any other evangelical obedience to them, as their righteousness, but by imputing Christ's active obedience to the whole law, and Passive obedience in his sufferings and death, for their whole and sole righteousness, b they receiving and resting on him and his righte ousness by faith ; which faith they have not of themselves, it is the gift of God. c
