As a concluding remark, I would remind the student that one great object of an acquaintance with a living language is the acquisition of a facility in speaking it; and with regard to the French tongue, nothing short of this acquisition can entitle him to the designation of a sound French scholar.

Having exerted my utmost endeavours to produce a work of real utility, I fervently trust that, whilst it facilitates the study of the French Language, it will afford as much delight to the Pupil, as it has done to the Editor in its compilation. I have but to add my sincere thanks for the learned and kind assistance so readily granted to me by those friends it has been my good fortune to make in this country.

33, MICHAEL-PLACE, BROMPTON, 15th April, 1839.

C. J. DELILLE.

"THE Répertoire littéraire is one of the best-constructed school books we have yet seen; and we happen to know that it is used with the best possible effect."-EVANGELICAL MAGA

ZINE.

"The Répertoire littéraire presents a series of extracts from the most celebrated French authors, from Pascal to Châteaubriand and Victor Hugo; and includes specimens of almost every variety of French prose composition. The notes of the compiler, which evince much learning, taste, and discrimination, will materially assist to a perfect understanding of the authors which they illustrate, while they point out several striking analogies, both in thought and expression, between the productions of French writers, and the classical compositions of antiquity. The selection, throughout, is as judicious as the elucidations are just and appropriate; and we have much pleasure in recommending this excellent work to our readers, as admirably calculated to facilitate the improvement of learners, and as being at the same time replete with interest to all admirers of French Literature."-LITERARY CHRonicle.

"For the acquirement of a correct understanding of the French Language the Répertoire littéraire is an excellent work, because, besides its initiating the student into the minutia, and giving him explanations of the ordinary difficulties as they occur, it introduces to him the elegancies and refinements, the beauties and peculiarities

of the language, from the age of Louis XIV. to the present time. A more judicious mode of communicating a knowledge of the genius of the language could not have been adopted; and the manner in which the author has selected, as well as arranged, the various extracts, and the learning and sound taste he displays in his notes and illustrations, render this a work which is likely to have a wide and continued circulation, as it must certainly have an extensive and beneficial influence."-TYNE MERCURY.

"In the Répertoire littéraire there is ample evidence that M. Delille seeks no less to render the grammatical construction of the language familiar to his pupils, than to imbue them at the same time with a correct appreciation of the style of thought and expression of the best French authors. . . .We can promise every pupil who uses the Répertoire abundant amusement....The notes make the work most complete, and will save a 'world of trouble' to teachers."-KENT HERald.
