* It would be very unreasonable to infer the gloomy doctrine of eternal misery from the loose and figurative language of a prophetic vision, in opposition to the plainest dictates of reason and justice, and to the whole tenor of divine revelation. But if any one is disposed to lay un due stress upon this text, it may be sufficient to remark, that it is not here asserted that the tor ment continues, but that the smoke of it ascends to the ages of ages.
