WHILE he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother 46 and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. viii. 19. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy 47 brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered 48 and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, 49 Behold my mother and my brethren! THE same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat 13 Mark iv. 1. by the sea-side. And great multitudes were gathered to- 2 Luke viii. 4. gether unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore. And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying; Behold, a sower went forth to sow. And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way-side; and the fowls came and devoured them up. Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth; and when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them. But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some a hundred-fold, some sixtyfold, some thirty-fold. He answered and 11 said unto them; Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven; but to them it is not given. For 12 whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance : but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing, see not; 13 and hearing, they hear not; neither do they understand. And in them is 14 fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith," By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive: for 15 this people's heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them." But blessed are your 16 eyes, for they see and your ears, for they hear. For, verily, I say unto 17 you, That many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them.

This is he which received seed by the wayside. But he that received seed into the good ground, is he 23 that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundred-fold, some sixty, some thirty.

ANOTHER parable put he forth unto them, saying, The 24 and wheat: Mark kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed iv. 26. good seed in his field but while men slept, his enemy 25 came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when 26 the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, 27 didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?' He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants 28 said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he 29 said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest and in the time 30 of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

ANOTHER parable put he forth unto them, saying, The 31 tard-seed: Mark kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard-seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: which indeed 32 is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

ANOTHER parable spake he unto them: The kingdom 33 of the leaven. of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till the whole was leavened.

ALL these things spake Jesus unto the multitude in parables; and 34 without a parable spake he not unto them; that it might be fulfilled which 35 was spoken by the prophet, saying, "I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things which have been kept secret from the foundation of the world."

Explanation of the THEN Jesus sent the multitude away, and went into the 36 parable of the tares. house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Declare unto us the parable of the tares of the field. He answered and said unto 37 them; He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man; 'the field is the 38 world; the good seed are the children of the kingdom; but the tares are the children of the wicked One; the enemy that sowed them is the devil; 39 the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are the angels. As 40 therefore the tares are gathered and burned in the fire; so shall it be in the end of this world. The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and 41 they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity; and shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be 42 wailing and gnashing of teeth. Then shall the righteous shine forth as 43 the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.

JESUS saith unto them, Have ye understood all these things? They say 51 unto him, Yea, Lord. Then said he unto them, Therefore every scribe 52 which is instructed unto the kingdom of heaven, is like unto a man that is a householder, which bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.

For Herod had laid hold 3 on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for Herodias' sake, his brother Philip's wife. For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee 4 to have her. And when he would have put him to death, he feared the 5 multitude, because they counted him as a prophet. But when Herod's 6 birth-day was kept, the daughter of Herodias danced before them, and pleased Herod whereupon he promised with an oath to give her what- 7 soever she would ask. And she, being before instructed of her mother, 8 said, Give me here John Baptist's head in a charger. And the king was 9 sorry; nevertheless, for the oath's sake, and them which sat with him at meat, he commanded it to be given her. And he sent, and beheaded 10 John in the prison. And his head was brought in a charger, and given 11 to the damsel and she brought it to her mother. And his disciples 12 came, and took up the body, and buried it, and went and told Jesus.

Christ reproves the THEN came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which 15 Pharisees, for their were of Jerusalem, saying, Why do thy disciples transgress 2 vii. 1. the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread. But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye 3 also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? For God 4 commanded, saying, "Honor thy father and mother:" and, "He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death." But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, It is a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; and honor not his father or his mother, he shall be free. Thus have ye made the commandment of God of none effect by your tradition. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, 7 saying, "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoreth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me. But in vain 9 they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." And he called the multitude, and said unto them, Hear and understand: 10 Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth a man; but that which 11 cometh out of the mouth, this defileth a man. Then came his disciples, 12 and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended after they heard this saying? But he answered and said, Every plant, which 13 my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: 14 they be blind leaders of the blind; and if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch. Then answered Peter, and said unto him, De- 15 clare unto us this parable. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without un- 16 derstanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at 17 the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But 18 those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, 19 murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies : These are the things which defile a man; but to eat with unwashen hands 20 defileth not a man.
