"thee: as thou hast given him power over all “flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, "that they might know thee the only true God, " and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent. I have glorified thee on the earth; I have finished the "work which thou gavest me to do. And now, "O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self, with the glory which I had with thee before the "world was. I have manifested thy name unto "the men which thou gavest me out of the world: "thine they were, and thou gavest them me; "and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given 66 me, are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have "received them, and have known surely that I 66 66 came out from thee, and they have believed that "thou didst send me. I pray for them; I pray << not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine "are thine, and thine are mine, and I am glorified "in them. And now I am no more in the world, "but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those "whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, << as we are. While I was with them in the world, "I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest I have kept, and none of them is lost, but "the son of perdition; that the scripture might "be fulfilled. And now come I to thee, and these things I speak in the world, that they might have . 46 my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given "them thy word; and the world hath hated them, "because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldst "take them out of the world; but that thou "shouldst keep them from the evil. They are "not of the world; even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: Thy word is "truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. "And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they "also might be sanctified through the truth. "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them "also which shall believe on me through their "word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, "art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be "one in us; that the world may believe that thou "hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me, I have given them, that they may be one, even as we are one. I in them, and thou in me, "that they may be made perfect in one, and that "the world may know that thou hast sent me, "and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me. Father, I will, that they also whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am: that they may behold my glory which thou hast given me; "for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the "world.. O righteous Father, the world hath not "known thee: but I have known thee, and these "have known that thou hast sent me. And I have "declared unto them thy name, and will declare "it; that the love wherewith thou hast loved me, << may be in them, and I in them." Matt. xxvi. 30-35. Mark xiv. 26-31. Luke xxii. 39. John xviii. 1. When Jesus had spoken these words, he went forth (out of the city) over the brook Cedron, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him. Then saith Jesus unto them, "All ye shall be offended be"cause of me this night: for it is written, I will "smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock "shall be scattered abroad. But after I am risen "again, I will go before you into Galilee." But Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. Jesus said unto him, "Verily "I say unto thee, that this day, even in this night, "before the cock crow twice, thou shalt deny me "thrice." But he spake the more vehemently, If I should die with thee, I will not deny thee in any wise. Likewise also said all the disciples. Matt. xxvi. 36-45. Mark xiv. 32–42. Luke xxii. 40-46. John xviii. 1, 2. Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, where was a garden, into which he entered, and his disciples. And Judas also, which betrayed him, knew the place; for Jesus oft-times resorted thither with his disciples. And when he was at the place, he said unto them, "Sit "ye here, while I go and pray yonder." And he took with him Peter, and James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, and he began to be sorrowful, sore amazed, and very heavy. Then saith Jesus unto them, "My soul is exceeding sorrow“ful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch "with me." And he went a little farther, and was withdrawn from them about a stone's cast, and fell on his face on the ground, and prayed, that if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, Abba, O my Father, if it be pos"sible, and all things are possible unto thee, take "away this cup from me: nevertheless, not my "will, but thine be done." And he cometh unto the disciples, and findeth them sleeping, and saith unto Peter: "Simon, "sleepest thou?. what, could ye not watch with 66 me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not "into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but "the flesh is weak." And he went away the second time, and prayed, saying, "O my Fa"ther, if this cup may not pass away from me, 66 except I drink it, thy will be done." And he returned, and found them asleep again, for their eyes were heavy, neither wist they what to answer him. And he left them, and went away again, and prayed the third time, saying the same words. And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, he prayed more earnestly (with strong crying and tears, Heb. v. 7.) and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. And when he arose up from prayer, and was come the third time to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow; and said unto them, "Why sleep ye now, and take your rest? it is enough; rise and lest pray, "enter into temptation. Behold, the hour is come, " and the Son of man is betrayed into the hands "of sinners. Rise up, let us go; lo, he that betrayeth me is at hand." ye Matt. xxvi. 47-56. Mark xiv. 43-52. Luke xxii. 47-54. John xviii. 3-12. And immediately, while he yet spake, lo, Judas, one of the twelve, came, having received a band of men, and officers, from the chief priests and pharisees, with lanterns, torches and weapons. Jesus therefore knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth and said unto them, "Whom seek ye?" They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them, "I am he." And Judas also, which betrayed him, stood with them. As soon then as Jesus had said unto them, I am he, they went backward and fell to the ground. Then asked he them again, "Whom "seek ye?" And they said, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus answered, "I have told you that I am he: "if therefore ye seek me, let these go their way:" That the saying might be fulfilled, which he spake, Of them which thou gavest me, have I lost none. And he that betrayed him, had given them a token, saying, Whomsoever I shall kiss, that same is he; hold him fast, and lead him away safely. And forthwith he came to Jesus, and said, Hail, Master, and kissed him. And Jesus said unto him, "Friend, wherefore art thou come? Judas, be trayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?" Then came they and laid hands on Jesus, and took him. When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them, Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it, and smote the high-priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. And Jesus answered and said, "Suffer ye thus far." And he touched his ear, and healed him: and said unto Peter, "Put up thy sword into the sheath; for all they that take the sword, shall perish with the "sword. Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray "to my Father, and he shall presently give me more than twelve legions of angels? The cup "which my Father hath given me, shall I not "drink it? But how then shall the scriptures be "fulfilled, that thus it must be?" In that same hour said Jesus unto the chief priests and captains of the temple, and the elders which were come to him, "Are ye come out as 66 against a thief, with swords and with staves, to "take me? When I was daily with you in the temple, teaching, ye stretched forth no hands against me but this is your hour, and the power "of darkness." But all this was done, that the scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then |
