7th January, 1941 One week after New Year's — on a Tuesday — Mi arrived at
Ellen's in a taxi. Bonnie was in the back seat with Bear — Bear in a brown paper
bag. Mi said: "is he ready?" meaning Matthew. Ellen said: "yes. You're late.
Yes." Ellen pulled herself up to her feet and drank from a glass she had brought
for herself. "Alcohol turns him into a madman," she said. "It always did." "Thanks
for the brand-new information," said Mi. Ellen looked at her. "Michael," she said.
There is a photograph of Mi and Ellen. Also one of Isabel and Mi. They are
seated on the back porch steps at Foxbar Road, wearing overcoats. Pale spring
