ART. I. Le but de la Guerre est de rétablir l'indépendance des Etats opprimés par la France: les 2 Hautes Parties Contractantes s'obligent par conséquent à diriger toutes leurs opérations vers ce but, et comme, pour l'atteindre, il est essentiel de reconstruire la Prusse dans les proportions nécessaires, et à empêcher què la France n'occupe désormais des places fortes dans le Nord de l'Allemagne, ou y exerce une influence quelconque; Sa Majesté le Roi du Royaume Uni de la Grande Bretagne et de l'Irlande s'engage à co-opérer efficacement à cette fin. Par contre Sa Majesté le Roi de Prusse, qui dans ses transactions avec la Russie, a déjà mis expressément en réserve les droits de la Maison de Brunswic Lunebourg sur le Hannovre, co-opérera de toutes ses forces, à faire restituer tant à cette Auguste Maison, qu'à la Maison Ducale de Brunswic, leurs Etats Héréditaires.

II. En conséquence de l'Article ci-dessus, les 2 Hautes Parties Contractantes sont convenues de s'aider réciproquement de tous les moyens que la Providence a mis à leur disposition; et Sa Majesté le Roi de Prusse s'engage à entretenir en campagne 80,000 hommes, sans compter les garnisons des places fortes.

III. L'Angleterre de son côté promet de mettre à la disposition de Sa Majesté le Roi de Prusse,

concluded the following Articles:

ART. I. The object of the present War being to re-establish the independence of the States oppressed by France, the 2 High Contracting Parties bind themselves, in consequence, to direct all their operations towards that end; and as, in order to accomplish the same, it will be essential to replace Prussia in possession of her relative Power, and to prevent France from ever occupying henceforward any of the strong places in the North of Germany, or exercising any sort of influence in that quarter; His Majesty the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland engages to co-operate effectually to that end. On the other hand, His Majesty the King of Prussia, who, in his transactions with Russia, has already expressly reserved the rights of the House of Brunswick Lunenburgh upon Hanover, will co-operate with all his means towards the restoration of their Hereditary States, to that August House, and to the Ducal House of Brunswick.

II. In consequence of the preceding Article, the 2 High Contracting Parties have agreed to assist each other, with every means which Providence has placed at their disposal; and His Majesty the King of Prussia engages to maintain in the field an Army of 80,000 men, exclusive of the garrisons in the fortresses.

III. England, on her side, engages to place at the disposal of His Prussian Majesty the follow

IV. Quoique le présent Traité ne stipule que les Secours à fournir par la Grande Bretagne pour toute l'année 1813, cependant, comme leurs Engagemens réciproques doivent porter sur toute la durée de la Guerre actuelle, les 2 Hautes Parties Contractantes promettent formellement de s'entendre de nouveau sur l'assistance à se prêter mutuellement, si, ce qu'à Dieu ne plaise, la Guerre devoit se prolonger au-delà de ce terme, et cela principalement pour donner de plus grands développemens à leurs efforts.

V. Les 2 Hautes Parties Contractantes agiront dans le plus parfait concert, quant aux opérations militaires, et se coinmuniqueront franchement ce qui regarde leur politique; surtout elles s'engagent réciproquement à ne point négocier séparément avec leurs Ennemis communs, à ne signer ni Paix, ni Trève, ni Con

e. A Commission, appointed by the 3 Contracting Powers, shall regulate every thing relative to the distribution of this sum, the payments of which shall be made progressively from month to month.

Every thing which regards the form, the guarantee, the issue, the employment, the circulation, and the reimbursement of this Paper, shall be regulated in a more formal manner, by a Special Convention, the Stipulations of which shall have the same force and validity, as if they were inserted, word for word, in the present Treaty.

IV. Although the present Treaty only stipulates for the Succours to be furnished by Great Britain for the year 1813, nevertheless, as the reciprocal Engagements of the 2 High Contracting Parties are to be considered with reference to the whole duration of the present War, they formally promise to come to a fresh understanding, as to the assistance to be mutually afforded to each other, if, which God forbid, the War should be prolonged beyond that period, and chiefly in order to give a greater developement to their exertions.

V. The 2 High Contracting Parties will act in the most perfect concert, with regard to military operations, and will communicate frankly with each other on what relates to their policy; and further, they reciprocally engage to enter into no separate Negoti. ation with the common Enemy, and sign neither Peace, nor Truce,

VI. Des Officiers pourront être accrédités auprès des Généraux en Chef des diverses Armées agissantes. VII. La Marine Angloise coopérera partout où elle le pourra, à la défense des Etats Prussiens, à l'avancement des expéditions militaires pour la Cause commune, et à la protection du Commerce de la Prusse,

VIII. Le présent Traité sera communiqué incessamment à la Russie, la Suède, et l'Autriche.

IX. Il sera ratifié dans le plus court délai possible.

En foi de quoi les Plénipotentiaires respectifs ont signé la présente Convention de leur main, et y ont apposé le Cachet de leurs Armes.

Fait à Reichenbach, le 14 Juin, l'an de Grâce, 1813.

VI. Officers may be accredited to the Commanders in Chief of the several Armies in active service: they will be entitled to correspond with their Courts, and keep them constantly informed of the military events which shall have occurred, as well as of every thing relative to the operations of those Armies.

VII. The British Navy shall co-operate, wherever it is practicable, in the defence of the Prussian States, in support of the military expeditions in aid of the common Cause, and in the protection of the Commerce of Prussia.

VIII. This Treaty shall forth. with be communicated to Russia Sweden, and Austria.

IX. It shall be ratified with the least possible delay.

In witness whereof the respective Plenipotentiaries have signed the present Convention with their hand, and have thereunto affixed the Seal of their Arms.

Done at Reichenbach, the 14th June, in the year of our Lord, 1813.

His Majesty the King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and His Majesty the Emperor of All the Russias, have spared no sacrifice, neglected no effort, to put a limit to the destructive projects of the Enemy of Europe. It is at a period when Providence has manifestly favoured their Arms that Their Majesties, animated with the desire of restoring independence, peace, and prosperity to Nations, have agreed, with a view of employing all the means in their power for the attainment of this salutary end, to adjust, by a particular Convention, the nature and extent of the pecuniary Succours, and the assistance which the 2 Crowns shall mutually afford to each other during this War.
