THAT there is a power in the Church for reclaiming offenders and removing scandal, is held by Presbyterians. Christ has given to her the keys of the kingdom of heaven, the key of doctrine and the key of order, and her purity and prosperity will be promoted in proportion to her fidelity in managing the trust committed to her. Discipline, the key of -order, is exercised by church courts in receiving applicants into her fellowship, and in dealing with disorderly members, by the infliction of the proper censures. By laxity of discipline the membership of the church will be augmented, but in the same proportion her power as a spiritual agency will be impaired and weakened. In this direction there is, in the various religious bodies, a manifest and alarming tendency.

We adduce, in illustration of the remarks just made, a pretty well known case that has lately transpired. The body calling itself "The General Synod of the Reformed Presbyterian Church," at its late meeting in Pittsburgh, made an attempt to be faithful in the exercise of discipline, that has called forth comments from various quarters. A ruling elder, a member of Synod, took occasion to say in the court, that he had sung hymns, and communed with other churches, and would do. so again. For this utterance he was arraigned, and after several days of earnest discussion, he was suspended from the exercise of his office, and from the privileges of the church.

We do not propose to argue the point of the righteousness of the action of Synod, any further than may be necessary for the point we have in hand. The majority of that court believed that by the standards of the church, to which all members and officers pledged themselves, singing hymns in worship and intercommunion with other churches were forbidden. With such a conviction, what else could they do, consistently with their obligations, with a member of the court who boastfully proclaimed that he had done those acts, and defiantly declared that he would do them again? We see clearly enough that he had some show of defense, in the fact that these acts had been done with impunity by others, and that Synod at previous meetings had, by certain deliver
