Who is the true bread that came down from heaven?

Jesus Christ.-John vi. 32-58.

Why do you only pray for "daily bread ?"

Because we are commanded to take no anxious thought for the morrow.—Matt. vi. 32.

Why do you every day repeat "give us this day?"

Because we every day depend upon God's goodness, to give us what we want, and to bless what we have.

The fifth petition?

"And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us."

What does this pray for?

"That God would be merciful to us, and

forgive us our sins."

What do you mean by "trespasses ?"

Sins.

What is sin?

Sin is to do anything which God forbids,

or not to do what he commands.-1 John

iii. 4.

Will God forgive us, if we do not forgive others?

No.-Matt. vi. 14, 15. Mark xi. 25. Luke vi. 37.

The sixth petition?

"Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

What is this prayer?

"That it would please God to save and defend us, in all dangers, ghostly and bodily, and that he would keep us from all sin and wickedness, and from our ghostly enemy, and from everlasting death."

Does God tempt man?

God never tempts man in the sense of leading him into sin, but God does tempt man in the sense of putting him to trial.Jas. i. 12-14. Gen. xxii. 1.

Why do you pray, "Lead us not into temptation ?"

Because all temptations and all trials are by God's permission; and if we pray, God will either deliver us from them, or support us under them.-1 Cor. x. 13. 2 Peter ii. 9. Rev. iii. 10.

What is our Lord's command on this subject?

"Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation."-Matt. xxvi. 41.

What is the "evil" you pray to be kept from?

All harm and danger, both to soul and body; but especially I pray to be kept from sin, and from its punishment, "everlasting death."

What is the conclusion of the Lord's Prayer?

"For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen."

What does this mean ?

That we know God can grant all our pe

titions, for that all things in heaven and earth

are his. All rule, and authority, and power, and glory, for ever and ever.

Amen.

What do you mean by " Amen ?"

I mean "So be it"-I hope that God, of his mercy and goodness, will, for Christ's sake, grant all I have prayed for.

Why do you trust that God will hear and answer you?

Because he is the hearer and answerer of prayer.-Ps. lxv. 2; xxxiv. 15—17; cii. 17. Matt. vi. 1.; xxi. 22. Mark xiv. 41. John xvi. 23. 1 John v. 14.

In what cases will God not answer prayer? There are four cases in which God wil not answer prayer. First, when he has often called, but we will not hear until misery makes us cry.-Prov. i. 24. Luke xiii. 25; xiv. 24. Heb. viii. 9.

Second. When we mean to continue in sin. Ps. 1. 16; cxix. 155. Prov. xv. 8, 29; xxviii. 9.

Third. When we set up our idols in our

hearts, and come to inquire of him.-Ezek. xiv. 3.

Fourth. When we ask amiss, things to satisfy the lusts of this world.—Jas. iv. 3.

SACRAMENTS.-I.

How many Sacraments hath Christ ordained in his church?

66

Two only, as generally necessary to salvation-that is to say, baptism, and the supper of the Lord."

Why do you say "Two only?"

Because the Roman Church has ordained seven, but our Lord only ordained two. Why do you say "generally necessary?" Because they are binding upon all Christians everywhere, who have the opportunity of observing them; but those are excepted who have no opportunity, or who from sickness or infirmity are incapable.
