PREFACE.

THE DÉBUT is a first start in French. Its earlier lessons contain a plain consecutive exposition of the component parts of the language, leading to a variety of examples on their simple and idiomatic application, very plentifully developed in the sequel, and classified according to the previous order.

These examples, which illustrate rules of the French grammar or explain phraseological asperities, are all translated, and should be learnt by heart. Each set of them is besides followed by a collection of others for practice, untranslated, intended to be learnt to construe with the help of the preceding pages.

The French language has much that may be rendered, intelligibly, almost word for word into English, but it has much more that is peculiar to itself, and which does not admit of a direct translation. All sentences, however, obey certain principles, and may be grouped into systems. Such is the plan adopted here, and the DÉBUT purposes to be mainly
