MADAM, It was your happy privilege to associate yourself with your distinguished husband in the endowment of the Baldwin Lectures, following the example of illustrious women in the Mother Church and furnishing an example which I trust will be imitated by Christian women in America in time to come. I count it a great honour to have received the first appointment as Baldwin Lecturer under the judicious provisions of the foundation. Suffer me to inscribe these first-fruits of the project to you, as a tribute to yourself and to my beloved friend, "the Governor," as his fellow citizens still delight to call him, even now when he has withdrawn himself from public life. The far-seeing and gifted prelate who presides over the diocese of Michigan has endeared himself to the Church at large by the establishment of the HOBART GUILD at the seat of the State University, for the promotion of Christian work in that seat of learning.
