The reasons for choosing sainte-beuve's famous C'auserz'w to follow Quinet's Letters in the series, the object of which has been defined in the preface to the opening volume, need no explanation. Nor is it necessary to do more than mention the fact that choice from such an abundant treasury is unusually difficult. In the following selection I have been guided chiefly, if not wholly, by a desire to vary subjects, periods, and styles as much as possible. The average Causerz'e being fully twenty pages long, it has not been possible to give entire examples in all cases. But three of the articles are complete, and in all but one or two instances the passages selected are substantive and of considerable length. With reference to the first two extracts, it should be observed that the title of Premiers Lundis is not in strictness sainte-beuve's own, and that the volumes so called were made up of early articles, up to that time uncollected, after his death. Lt seemed, however, desirable to show his touch at diflerent periods, to limit the examples to the famous Lundis, and to extend them to all the series commonly going by that name.
