Depuis les travaux de Descartes, de Gassendi et de Pascal, qui avaient mis les sciences à la mode, les femmes ne rêvèrent que mathématiques, astronomie, spéculations philosophiques. Elles traitaient de bas et d'ignoble tout ce qui était naturel et simple, et négligeaient le soin de leur maison, "Où l'on voyait aller tout sens dessus dessous." Cette prétention au savoir était bien peu propre à exciter le rire pendant cinq actes. Molière tira un parti merveilleux de ce fonds stérile, et il en fit une des comédies les plus amusantes et les plus parfaites qu'il y ait sur aucun théâtre. Il mit en scène trois pédantes d'un caractère différent. Armande, bel esprit solennel, ne conçoit pas qu'une femme puisse tolérer l'erreur si commune qu'on appelle mariage; elle ne saurait en entendre prononcer le nom sans un mal de cœur; elle détourne sa sœur de ce vulgaire dessein, qui lui paraît une pauvreté horrible.
