PART I.

THE common pretence of the doctors of the Church of Rome against allowing to the people the use of the holy Scriptures, is their being so extremely liable to be misunderstood, and to have false and corrupt senses imposed upon them. And indeed, whosoever impartially considers the wild and extravagant senses which they themselves impose upon sundry texts of Scripture, in defence of their own unscriptural doctrines, will be very much tempted to suspect, that their design was to make instances of the truth of this their pretence, and to convince the world how liable the Scripture is to be abused, not only by the common people, but also by men of wit and learning, when once they are listed by their interest to serve a bad cause and to strengthen this suspicion, I know no greater argument, than their vain and impotent endeavour to justify from Scripture this most uncharitable and unchristian practice of their Church, viz. their concealing from the people their
