The Galaxy, an Illustrated Magazine of Entertaining
Reading. Published fortnightly. No. 39 Park
Row.

Five Nos. of this magazine have appeared. It requires a considerable weighing of evidence to satisfy one's self that it is not issued in London. In typography and pictorial illustration, in the character and variety of matter, in a happy mingling of innocent light literature with what is instructive, without ceasing to be attractive, the “Galaxy" has taken, and shows that it means to maintain a very high place in periodical literature.

MISCELLANEOUS.

By Gail Hamilton, author of Summer's Rest. "Country Living and Country Thinking," &c. Boston: Ticknor & Fields. pp. 356. "Gail Hamilton" is always lovable, for even in the extremest audacities of her fun, she remains womanly. In the last abandon of vivacity she is never coarse, as some of our dashing authoresses most decidedly are. She loves Nature, chickens and children included, and has the secret sympathy with the world she lives in, which makes it impossible for any genuine part of that world not to like her. We like her much, even when we like her leastthat is, in her polemics; and although we sometimes wish she would not write on topics of that class, we would rather have her writing even on them, than not write at all. This volume is one of the most polemical of the series, but, at the worst, that is only ballast. There is rich freight enough, and they are wise who get the book.

The Language of Flowers. Edited by Miss Ildrewe.
With an Introduction by Thomas Miller.
trated by Colored Plates, and numerous Wood-
cuts, after Gustave Doré, Daubigny, Timmns, and
others. pp. 216. Boston: De Vries, Ibarra & Co.
Works of this class have always been popular
among the young, in the loving time of life, and.
among those who keep a fresh memory of that
witching era, though its poetry seem to have van-
ished in the hard realities of later years.
volume gracefully executes its work, and will be
warmly welcomed to many a parlor table and
boudoir.

Crumbs from the Round Table. A Feast for Epicures. By Joseph Barber. pp. 106. New York: Leypoldt & Holt.

From the heart, as provided for by the poesy of flowers, as above, we descend to the stomach, as addressed in these luscious little culinary essays, croquets rather than crumbs, from the Round Table. Mr. Leypoldt's Owl still keeps good faith with the reader. Where he (the owl, we mean) is the bush the wine is sure to be of the best.
