"BIRDS'
""

AND

A SUPERB COPY OF THE FIRST OCTAVO EDITION OF BOTH THE
"" QUADRUPEDS '' IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS, THE RAREST AND MOST DESIRABLE
STATE, AND IN THE CHOICEST POSSIBLE CONDITION, as there are only a very
few slight foxings in the text, and practically none at all on the plates, the
tissues taking up the chemical action which is usually transferred to the
plates.

The wrappers are in magnificent condition, being mainly without a break,
and it is no exaggeration to say that THIS IS PROBABLY THE FINEST COPY

EXTANT.

It is interesting to note that the parts are all numbered by hand, showing that the wrappers for the entire edition were printed with the first number. Two different colored papers were used on the wrappers. Eleven of the parts were not trimmed by the binder before delivery to the subscriber, and may be unique.

CORRESPONDENCE BY THE AUTHOR OF “LORNA DOONE" WITH F. B. DOVETON AND OTHERS

9 BLACKMORE (R. D.). ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH LETTERS, comprising his Correspondence with F. B. Doveton, Mrs. Kirton, his Publishers, and Mrs. Kroeker, consisting of 44 Letters of various lengths, signed, and written between March 13, 1877 and May 28, 1897. With the original Envelopes. Inlaid and bound in 4to, crushed olive levant morocco, gilt back, line borders, gilt edges, by Riviere.

THIS IMPORTANT CORRESPONDENCE ALSO INCLUDES THE PROOF OF A POEM BY DOVETON, entitled "The Haunted Castle," which Blackmore has edited with humorous and critical comments. At the end he has written: "Won't do. Dashed off with a cigarette instead of a thoughtful pipe. The metre-Iambic dimetre-is not sufficiently observed." The letters are most interesting, and refer to his work; his wife's illness and death; angling; his dislike of the "Ingoldsby Legends''; he mentions Baring Gould, Mortimer Collins, his old School-Blundell's; his finances; his "Alice Lorraine," and "Tales from the Telling House, etc., etc. The last letter, dated May 28, 1897, was written less than three years before his death. He writes: "I have little time now to look at anything, and see very few of the Magazines, for I can no longer get about with any comfort. Though my fruit crop is utterly smashed, I have as much to do as ever, and become rapidly less fit to do it."

[ocr errors]

SUCH AN EXTENDED CORRESPONDENCE BY THE AUTHOR OF "LORNA DOONE' AS THIS IS QUITE UNUSUAL.
