Duelling-when life is sacrificed, is punished as manslaughter; and the act of duelling is liable to a heavy fine.
Fornication and Prostitution-first offence finable; the second from two to five years imprisonment.
Vagrancy or Begging out of the District to which the individual belongs, from two to five years imprisonment.
Gambling-Stakes of sixpence and under, are not gambling in the eye of the law; but all stakes beyond that sum, upon whatever game, &c. are to be thus denominated; such sums cannot be legally paid, and together with any species of property so lost, are recoverable by law from the receiver and his heirs, by a simple proof of the gambling nature of the transaction. Moreover, persons who keep houses for betting, for stakes, or games of whatever kind, whether the amount be under sixpence or above it, and who gain their livelihood by billiard tables, &c. are punished with five years imprisonment.
Conspiracy against the sovereign, the State, or private individuals, is punished alike, by fine or
imprisonment, from one year to life, according to the objects contemplated, and the means used, or in other words, the nature of the offence.
Libel and Slander-are visited with fine or imprisonment, according to the circumstances.
Political Associations-with fine or imprisonment, and loss of civil privileges.
The punishments of offences against the law of masters and workmen, as we have already stated, are fine and imprisonment.
The labour and rigour of imprisonment will be proportionate to the crime in all cases; but there is to be no imprisonment without labour.
Flogging-whether of children or adults, being convicted under the criminal code, is wholly abolished.
