Edition originale
First editions. A Journey to Madras contains "much information on the productions, climate, manufactures, as also on the manners, religion, &c. of these districts" (Lowndes). Buchanan's work was published after Lord Richard Wellesley's controversial conquest of Mysore. An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal is bound as volume four. Buchanan (1762-1829) was an East India Company surgeon and botanist. He arrived in Bengal in 1794 and was appointed by Lord Wellesley to survey the newly conquered kingdom of Mysore, "a posting which enabled him to collect a vast number of new botanical specimens" (ibid.). His survey played a pivotal role in mediating the developing conflict between the colonial administrators stationed in India and the Court of Directors in London. "Up until the late eighteenth century, the Court of Directors of the EIC did not generally approve of further expansion and military conquests. Territorial administration was seen as inconsistent with the operations of a trading company and some influential directors had specifically opposed the war against Tipu Sultan. In this regard, Lord Wellesley had attempted to impress upon the British the great significance of the war against Tipu by arguing that the destruction of the Mysore regime was as important as any of the wars the British were fighting in Egypt at that time. By commissioning Buchanan to survey Mysore, Lord Wellesley sought to prove to his opponents in London that Mysore was a prosperous province and worthy of conquest" (Baber, p. 149). Although his kingdom was often at war, Tipu (1751-1799) oversaw significant improvements in industry and technology. In the 1780s he ordered the construction of "twenty iron-smelting furnaces within the kingdom. Some of this iron would have fed arms making, which reached very high levels. The Mysore state's interest in improving manufacturing extended to clocks, paper, and glass as well as other goods" (Rössner, p. 199). The other work included in this set, An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal, is "one of the most complete historical works of the country" (Lecomte-Tilouine, p. 46). Buchanan visited the Teshoo Lama in 1774 and Bhutan in 1776-7, and he stayed in Kathmandu from 1802-3. Access to most of Nepal was prohibited to foreigners, and Buchanan's mission under Captain Knox was forced to leave in 1803. Buchanan gives a valuable account of various tribes, including Magars, Gurung, Newar, Murmi, Kirati, Limbu, Lepcha, and Bhotiya. He also outlines the history, geography, and government structure. Provenance: gilt stamp of the Northern Light Board to the head compartment of spines, showing a lighthouse surmounted by a banderole bearing the company motto "in salutem omnium" ("for the safety of all"). Established in 1786 with headquarters at Edinburgh, the Northern Lighthouse Board was formed to oversee the construction and operation of four lighthouses around the coastline of Scotland. A Journey: Lowndes II, p. 300. Zaheer Baber, The Science of Empire: Scientific Knowledge, Civilization, and Colonial Rule in India, 1996; Philipp R. Rössner, ed., Economic Growth and the Origins of the Modern Political Economy: Economic reasons of state, 1500-2000, 2017. An Account: Yakushi H30. Marie Lecomte-Tilouine, "On Francis Buchanan Hamilton's Account of the Kingdom of Nepal", European Bulletin of Himalayan Research, nos 14-16, 1998. 2 works in 4 volumes (266 x 205 mm). Contemporary polished calf by Robert Seton of Edinburgh, spines with raised bands, red and green labels, gilt in compartments, Northern Light Board gilt stamp at head of spines, covers with gilt fillet and blind borders, board edges decorated in gilt and turn-ins in blind, endpapers and edges marbled, Seton ticket in each volume. With hand-coloured folding regional map engraved by Samuel John Neele, 38 engravings (one hand-coloured), and 5 folding statistical tables; 7 engraved plates (5 folding), folding map of Nepal. Light restoration to spine ends and front joint of vol. IV, spines lightly sunned, a few marks to bindings, small dampstain to upper cover of vol. IV, all folding plates, maps, and tables backed on linen. A very good set.
