This is the second edition. "Preface to the second edition, in 1812" is on p.ix-xiv" in the first volume. The first edition was published in 1782
The first six volumes state that the edition is "In six volumes" (and the sixth is described as "Volume VI. Part I", the index originally being intended to be part 2). However, seventh, eighth and ninth volumes were added between 1813 and 1816. Some sets omit some or all of these later volumes
Volume 7 (the index) is divided into two parts. Part 1 (published 1813) contains indexes to volumes 1-6, and part 2 (published 1816) indexes to volumes 8 and 9
"Directions for lacing the portraits, &c." i.e. the placement of the plates in v.1-v.6 is on p.xvi in the first volume. In v.8 directions are on page x. In v.9 directions are on page xvi
